5 of 5! I think it was be a good start :)

ngusakov

‘I think it was a good start.’, doesn’t need ‘be’ again, cause ‘was’ is a past format of ‘be’.

    Shallker

hahahahahaha do not be so cruel

    AleAle96

You can use or be or was..It depends of the tense you use..if you want to say something which already happened you use was and for the present you use be..

    AleAle96

First!

Merlin

Ronnie, what is correct? I am first who leaves the message, or I am first who leave the message?

Maki

Yeah, the same question I was going to ask. And also does it change anything if we say: I am the first person who ? the message???

      Himat

Hi Ronnie I like your style of teaching so I wanted to complement you.
I would be happy if you can take a class on what are first person singular and Plural. What are 2nd person singular and plural and 3rd person Singular and plural.

      what means third person singular

      changel

      thanks ronie

      Mohamed Farid

“I am first who leaves the message, or I am first who leave the message?”

if i remember right leaves you will use only with he she or it so at your sentence you should use leave. If you would write she he or it you would use leaves

      amin90

You must discover why you can’t keep on speaking – do you lack vocabulary? Are you shy? Are you not good at conversation? Look up “How to keep a conversation going” on the website – it’s one of my lessons!

        Ronnie

no i have a convenient vocabulary .also i’m not shy opposite hhhhhhh i want to know how to invest my ability when i talk to someone that’s the contrary of writing i dont have any problem with .so i wanna catch up that sir

“am” is verb and
“busy” is an adjective

Always review what you learn to remember!

    Ronnie

When do we use present perfect in a sentence?

      Shirley

When we talk about a event in the past with no time marker. Ex… I have been to Mexico. VS i went to Mexico last year.

        Ronnie

And when we talk about a period of time in the past Ex: ‘I have studied English in highschool’ or ‘I studied English in highschool’

Hi Ronnie!
I have a request for you. Would you please explain the use of gerund after the preposition “to”, like in “I am looking forward to hearing from you” or “we intend to getting back” For non native English speakers it is sometimes difficult to determine if we use “to” as a preposition or as part of the infinitive form. I´d be delighted if you could do that for me.
Best regards,
Richard.

Hi, Ronnie, I enjoy watching your lessons, you’ve got no idea of how much I’ve learned from them. The verb to be is one of the most difficult to comprehend when you are a Spanish native speaker, specially because we have two different verbs to express what you do with just one. In Spanish, “to be” could be translated as “ser” or “estar”, both being different. Well, thanks for this and the other lessons you’ve prepared for us. Greetings from México.

Michel

thank you very much Ronnie

It depends on the usage of the modal! Sometimes we use modal + have + p.p. Sometimes present tense!

    Ronnie

Dear Ronnie,

I saw in many english movies the word ain’t used..Is it same as Am not I??

And in the video lesson you said that it is very unusual to start question with “isn’t it”..but Almost all teachers in my school days they used to say “isn’t it” ?? Is it completely wrong…Or Is acceptable to say like
” Isn’t she” or “Isn’t he”?

rajamurugan

It is not wrong – just unnatural.

    Ronnie

it,s useful lesson …thank you teacher

avhi

hi Ronnie I love your classes, i have studied by myself, everydays I listen in my ipod your english classes and some news from BBC during 2 hours per day the point is, i can´t understand ” The native people on the streets ” just some speakers and tutors, now i am taking private classes with a nigerian girl, but her pronunciation is totaly different of my last teachers, so i am confused about the correct pronunciation i was thinking about, how do i to learn more fast, am I on the correct way?

aleklawa

You are doing well to listen to the BBC and watch Engvid! Also, if your teacher is Nigerian, she will have a different accent! That is great to learn from many different sources!!!!

Hi, Ronnie! I like your lessons so much. Could you give me some pieces of advice, which exercises can be used with the verb “to be”, when it comes with the explanation of it to 9 years old child? Thank you very much!

mila

You can talk about jobs = He is a fireman. They are teachers. She is a doctor.
Or emotions – He is sad. I am happy.
Or locations – She is at home. He is under the bed!
    Good luck!

    Ronnie

      Hi Ronnie

We are talking about the usage of the verb “To be” but we didn’t use it even in a single sentence. Kindly give an example of verb “To be” and also what is the meaning of word “To be”

When I can use To Be verb? or To Do verb?

for example: do you hungry? or are you hungry?

Tom

If the word is an adjective, you must use to be. Ex…hungry is an adjective so you must say I am hungry!
Sub + to be + adjective.

Sub + do + noun. I do homework. I do the dishes.

    Ronnie

i got perfect score!!!

Hi, Ronnie,

BBC caption: “Crime to be reported to police…”. Why not “Crime will be reported to police…”? What grammar rule allows to remain “to be” unchangeable in cases like this?

rustudent

It’s short for “The crime is to be reported to the police”. News headlines often shorten things to get across more information, so they can seem ungrammatical.

    engVid Moderator

heh ronnie ur the best teacher they way u taught us z superb nd i have a question for u that with i and we mostly we use shall but in books i read that i will nd we will so would u pls explain it em waiting for ur answer

mehak khan

Hi, Ronnie

Why only the pronoun “I” is written with capital letter, whilst the other pronouns like you, he, she etc. are written with lowercase letter?

Take care,

Vilson

Vilson Filippon

I have no idea why! However, every time you write I, you must use a capital!

    Ronnie

Thanks a lot^^

If is possible, could you please answer me what kind of verb tense is the sentence bellow ?:
“Many chapters have disappeared entirelly, and their material HAS BEEN CONDENSED into existing..”

Question: there is a mix of present perfect and present perfect continuos?

rogeriosam

“Many chapters have disappeared entirely, and their material HAS BEEN CONDENSED into existing.
    Have disappeared = present perfect.
Has been condensed = present perfect passive!

    Ronnie

Great lessons Ronnie !
which is correct ?
She is not there .
She was not there.

Manju

She is not there= present tense.
She was not there = past tense.
    They are both correct!

    Ronnie

when to use be +ing for example be sitting, be continuing, I want to know the exact uses.

prashant1974

Be + verbING we use for things we are doing RIGHT NOW!!! For example, I am typing, I am breathing. My dog is sleeping. This is called present continuous!

Hello Ronnie! How can I think in English? I mean, sometimes I think a little, and when I’m going to talk with some people I forget my language and I answer some questions in English (I know this seems a little weird, but I do). I’d like to know, how can I think more in English and even to dream in English! Some exercises? Thanks a lot! £÷)

I found her clothing designs to be enormously appealing.
What does the word “to be” means here?
As I think it’s not necessary to bring it here, but why I don’t know.
Plz answer!

Thanks Teacher. Good Lesson

ANDRES VIVAS

Hello Ronnie!
you use “is” together with singular.
example: he is, she is, this is, that is and like that.

But Why is it then correct to say “everyone is”? because everyone means that it is many people we talk about.

Because when we are many we use are. But as I understand it is correct to say: everyone is.

so why is it right to say everyone is?

thank you

Hi Ronnie ^.^
How’s it going?

Well, I will start to learn English by myself and I’ll go to use this site (EngVid) for that. I love how you and other teachers teach ♥. In this way, I wanna know where do I start? I know a little bit of English because once I read my English books. I know that my English isn’t perfect, but I can communicate with other people. Also, my vocabulary is limited and I get the words that I see in movies and search about it mean on the dictionary of the internet. I hope to be able to speak English until 2021 >.<

I'm going to prepare a schedule for myself. I've got a lot of work on my way hehehe.

Sya! ^~^
