What time do you get dressed in the morning? When is it necessary to dress up? Why did I use get dressed in one question, and dress up in the other? Find out why in this essential beginner lesson which talks about a very common confusion that new English speakers sometimes experience. Don’t forget to check your knowledge with the quiz!
I don’t understand the difference
if someone can help me
this my skype: m.elhadidy83
elhadidy83
Basically, it’s like this:
Get dressed = to put clothes on. You get dressed in the morning.
Dress up = to put on formal clothes, or to wear a costume.
Good luck!
Alex
I did not understand this dress up
BABYLONE
Get dressed: it is what you do regularly with out any occasion because every one shouldn’t be with out clothes.
Dressed up: it is what you do for some thing special like party or costume or staff like that
ashour20122
Hello there, ashour, I’m here just to help you a little bit in your phrase, “without” is one word, so you don’t say “with out”, same with “something”, except that something and some thing are two different things, like… Something is here (there is a thing in here…) some things are here (two or more things are here)
Foginhu
Dress up = to put on formal clothes, or to wear a costume.
Alex
Amaddio
Get dressed- put on your clothes beside your bed every morning. Dress up- put on your clothes in front of a mirror every Friday morning )))
Alikmalikk70
Thanks Alex :D
hoangngoc501
Hi Alex

May I ask you some questions in a private message?
Thank you.

MelissaCiro
please explain about “can be” and “could be”!
Also, how to use “would be”.
Takahiro Mano
Hi Alex..thank you so much..
Akhilesh.kr
‘Why are you________as Spider-Man.
Correct answer: ‘dressed up’.
But the tense is present.
What about ‘ dressing up’ ?
aroibas
It’s really easy, Alex do a great job! Just try the quiz again or watch the lesson second time. It would be more clear for you. I wish you luck!
! Now I have to get out of my bed and get dressed!
Thanks for the lesson Alex!
Temelakiev
I just take a shower, got dressed and went to watch TV, but late I dress me up and I went for the Marco’s farewell party.
I would like to know if my phrase is correct?
MASF
if you’re talking about what you did yesterday or in the past, you have to say …
I took a shower, I got dressed and went to watch tv, then I dressed up to go to marco’s farewell party…
I think is the right form, I’m learning like you…
rahbeat89
i don’t understand why you didn’t know ,affter this lesson it is very easy to get how different between two Phrasal Verbs
Huycan112
ha!, I didn’t know that… nice lesson Alex! thanks.
Konigxtiger
Took a quiz without watching the lesson and got 90 out of 100. The clue is, just think logically that “dress up” means to wear a elegant clothes or dress yourself for any important/particular “events” :3
xmichaxb7
Hi Micha, …to wear “A” elegant clothes?
or to wear (SOME)elegant clotheS?
Happy New Year!!!
Regino
Wow good correction ^^ I hope you can look over all common mistakes and that should be “some clothes /the clothes/ (directly say) ‘clothes’ ” I was writing without checking for correcting the mistakes. Thanks a lot and Happy New Year to you too. I guess you are wearing your fingers to the bone, as well. ;)
xmichaxb7
Yeah Micha, I know what you mean. To tell the truth, this does not wear me out.
Regards
Regino

Hi dear sir Alex.
This a very simple but very-very important video lesson. We got kinda very new thing.
THANK YOU FOR SUCH A SIMPLE,CLEAR AND IMPORTANT LESSON.
WELL, I’M HAVING SORTA QUERY AND HOPE YOU’LL ANSWER THAT! MY QUERY IS BELOW…….
1- HOW TO USE ‘HAVE HAD’, ‘HAVE HAS’ AND ‘HAVE HAVE’ ?
AND
WISH YOU A VERY VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR 2014 MY DEAR SIR ‘ALEX’!
AND HAVE A VERY GOOD DAY, TOO !
sona123
The only combinations which exist are these:
Have had = present perfect. Example: “I have had 3 pets in my whole life.”
Had had = past perfect. Example: “We had had a lot of problems before then.”
“Have has” and “Have have” don’t exist in English.
Alex
Thanks

Hi Alex;
i heard some words from american-rap songs :
’em, i’ma, betcha, yo, ya, yer, gotta, gon’, bro, …
Can you talk about these words ?
What are these words?
Mehran Sky
American rap, because it is a mostly black genre, has a lot of African-American Vernacular English (i. e. everyday black American English), which has different pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar from the standard English you learn in textbooks.
Some of the words you list are just shortened or blurred together:
In AAVE grammar, you can often leave out the “be” verb. So “He gon’…” means “He IS going to”. And “I’ma” is like “I’m gonna/I’m going to”. (“I gon'” means the same thing and is also correct.)
I now understand the difference between two expressions.
thanks Alex!
DAEHEON KANG
I do too Daeheon. Now I understand the difference between THESE two expressions.
Regards and Happy Holidays!!!

I don’t understand the difference
if someone can help me
this my skype: m.elhadidy83
Basically, it’s like this:
Get dressed = to put clothes on. You get dressed in the morning.
Dress up = to put on formal clothes, or to wear a costume.
Good luck!
I did not understand this dress up
Get dressed: it is what you do regularly with out any occasion because every one shouldn’t be with out clothes.
Dressed up: it is what you do for some thing special like party or costume or staff like that
Hello there, ashour, I’m here just to help you a little bit in your phrase, “without” is one word, so you don’t say “with out”, same with “something”, except that something and some thing are two different things, like… Something is here (there is a thing in here…) some things are here (two or more things are here)
Dress up = to put on formal clothes, or to wear a costume.
Alex
Get dressed- put on your clothes beside your bed every morning. Dress up- put on your clothes in front of a mirror every Friday morning )))
Thanks Alex :D
Hi Alex
Your lessons are so helpful.
May I ask you some questions in a private message?
Thank you.
Best
please explain about “can be” and “could be”!
Also, how to use “would be”.
Hi Alex..thank you so much..
‘Why are you________as Spider-Man.
Correct answer: ‘dressed up’.
But the tense is present.
What about ‘ dressing up’ ?
It’s really easy, Alex do a great job! Just try the quiz again or watch the lesson second time. It would be more clear for you. I wish you luck!
! Now I have to get out of my bed and get dressed!
Thanks for the lesson Alex!
I just take a shower, got dressed and went to watch TV, but late I dress me up and I went for the Marco’s farewell party.
I would like to know if my phrase is correct?
if you’re talking about what you did yesterday or in the past, you have to say …
I took a shower, I got dressed and went to watch tv, then I dressed up to go to marco’s farewell party…
I think is the right form, I’m learning like you…
i don’t understand why you didn’t know ,affter this lesson it is very easy to get how different between two Phrasal Verbs
ha!, I didn’t know that… nice lesson Alex! thanks.
Took a quiz without watching the lesson and got 90 out of 100. The clue is, just think logically that “dress up” means to wear a elegant clothes or dress yourself for any important/particular “events” :3
Hi Micha, …to wear “A” elegant clothes?
or to wear (SOME)elegant clotheS?
Happy New Year!!!
Wow good correction ^^ I hope you can look over all common mistakes and that should be “some clothes /the clothes/ (directly say) ‘clothes’ ” I was writing without checking for correcting the mistakes. Thanks a lot and Happy New Year to you too. I guess you are wearing your fingers to the bone, as well. ;)
Yeah Micha, I know what you mean. To tell the truth, this does not wear me out.
Regards

The only combinations which exist are these:
Have had = present perfect. Example: “I have had 3 pets in my whole life.”
Had had = past perfect. Example: “We had had a lot of problems before then.”
“Have has” and “Have have” don’t exist in English.
Thanks
I used to mess up both;now I got it! Occasionally I dress up.

Hi Alex;
i heard some words from american-rap songs :
’em, i’ma, betcha, yo, ya, yer, gotta, gon’, bro, …
Can you talk about these words ?
What are these words?
American rap, because it is a mostly black genre, has a lot of African-American Vernacular English (i. e. everyday black American English), which has different pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar from the standard English you learn in textbooks.
Some of the words you list are just shortened or blurred together:
– “’em” – “them”
– “betcha” – “bet you”/”bet that you”
– “gotta” – “got to” (“have to”)
– “bro” – “brother”
– “yer” – “your”
In AAVE grammar, you can often leave out the “be” verb. So “He gon’…” means “He IS going to”. And “I’ma” is like “I’m gonna/I’m going to”. (“I gon'” means the same thing and is also correct.)
Here’s more on AAVE grammar!
Thanks :)
Thanks.
10/10 :))
