I’m going to MAKE you a fluent English speaker! The word ‘make’ has at least 30 meanings in English, but in this lesson you will learn HOW the word works, and how you can use it effectively.
That series are amazing, I already watched GET and HAVE and now we have MAKE…James is great, I just love the way He teaches….
By the way, I’m looking for someone to practice english conversation.

Mr. E could barely make out his house because of the heavy rain. Which meaning of make is this?
A. to be a major reason for someone’s success
b. to bring happiness or pain
C. to be able to come to an event or appointment
D. to arrive at a certain time
E. to be looking for something / looking for sex
F to kiss for a long time
G. to see or hear with great difficulty
K. to ask or talk about how well you performed at some activity.
Hello james, I think the answer should be: “D. to arrive at a certain time”
“G. to see or hear with great difficulty ” is not appropriate.
Can you gimme more explainations ?. thanks james. I love the way you teach, very awesome :D.
turtlecub
“Mr. E could barely make out his house because of the heavy rain.” is ‘G’.
“Mr. E could barely make it to his house because of the heavy rain.” is ‘D’.
Mauro
The rain, I think, was so heavy – downpour, shower – that Mr. E could hardly see his house, – could barely make out his house.
Anny
Tom Turtle is always on the make for tips on English grammar. Which meaning of make is this? why is it not A?
Max-ti
I chose A, too. I don’t understand the answer.
babyvivi25
“I would love to make out with Jon”, said Mr. E. Which meaning of make is this?
The first answer (A) is incorrect. But so is the answer given as correct.
In this context, Mr E is not looking for something (on the make) but wanting to kiss ‘make out with’ (to kiss for a long time).
So I disagree with the result on this question. But the first answer is not the right one.
grannydeb
you make my day with those expression
josepaulino25
the correct answer for the question number 2 is “to kiss for a long time”

Hi, thank you for wonderful lession, but i have a doubt, for the second question. In this question, “make out” is a phrasal verb and Mr. E would love to kiss Jon long time, but you gave the answer as “looking for somehting/looking for sex,” but actually you said this is the meaning of noun “make.” Sorry for the mistakes in my sentence construction. Please explain me.
Ravijohn
Interesting:
‘make’ means ‘make to exist’, so
‘make to exist to exist’, so
‘make to exist to exist to exist’ … :-)

Could you explain how I use (-ness) like: Awareness, likeness, worthiness, etc… what’s the meaning of “-ness)?
juliosantos
When you add -ness to an adjective, it turns it into a noun that means “the state/quality of being [adjective]“. So, for example, awareness (aware + ness) means “the state of being aware”: “Because I was asleep, I had no awareness of what was going on.”

If a person can understand something it becomes useful for them and they can use it. This is information I got from one of your lessons and is a revelation to me. I am 60 years old and back when I went to school in Arizona the teachers did not take the time to explain things. I have a lot of english grammer “holes” because I did not understand certain things. You have given me hope to fill in some of the holes in my grammer. I will view everyone on your lessons
