The common verb “to be” is one of the most confusing verbs in English. In this basic grammar lesson, I’ll show you how to use this verb to describe the present, past, and future events of your life. You must master these basics to speak good English.
You were right Rebecca when you mentioned the sources of mistakes when using the verb To Be, your first language.
For instance, Spanish and Portuguese native speakers tend to use the verb To Have instead of To Be when talking about AGE.
Good review of the verb To Be.
Regino
Good luck D@sun, you’re good in English. :P
Fendy Nu
thanks mate :P
DaZun
you are a wonderful instructor for non-native speakers, so i appreciate your glamorous duty
bitsat
Hello, Rebecca! Do native speakers use Present Perfect a lot in a spoken language? I heard that you only use Past Simple, almost never use Perfect Tences.
Irina
Yes, native speakers use the perfect tenses, but first always master the use of the simple present, past and future tenses and then start using the perfect tenses yourself.
Sometimes it doesn’t matter which one you use – Simple Past or Present Perfect, as in:
I did my homework.
I have done my homework.
Sometimes it matters,
I lost my key.
I have lost my key.
The second one means clearly that the key is still lost, so sometimes those tenses are very useful. They are also more advanced, so they sound better in many situations.
My best to you, Irina.
Rebecca
Could you pls tell me the meaning of below sentences :
1.She has been working in the garden all afternoon.
2. She has worked in the garden all afternoon.
Assume that I am saying these sentence in night.
paras11213
paras11213 1)if you assume these sentences at night then first sentence was wrong because has been means still action is going on so where as the second sentence you are telling about the action which was completed in the afternoon offcourse long past so its better to keep in past simple even though specific time indication was not mentioned but it implies past.
kala mallik
1. Present perfect
– Because this sentence means that she is still on.
2. Past simple
– She has completed her job in the garden the whole afternoon.
Please don’t hesitate to correct me if i’m wrong.
Freeman1968

Thank you ,teacher.I want to know the difference between present perfect and present perfect continous.
Emad Yousef
“I have cooked dinner. ” – Present Perfect – this means you have finished cooking and the dinner is ready.
“I have been cooking dinner for 2 hours!’ – Present Perfect Continuous – means that you started cooking 2 hours ago and you are still cooking, so the dinner is not ready yet.
Hope that helps! My best to you.
Rebecca
Hello! Excuse me, but in the first sentence present perfect is like past simple, has means of finished action. Why dont we just use past simple?
Japon1
hello, rebecca!your way of teaching is very good
umairsaleem
A
very good lesson to understand the use of to be. I’d like to know if the past simple is more frequent than present perfect. Thanks

It may be that the past simple is used more often, but it also depends who you talk to and how well they speak! My best wishes to you.

There are many good books to help you improve your English vocabulary. You can study from such books and also read and listen to English every chance you get. The main point is that you have the desire to improve and so I am sure you will find many ways to do so. All the best to you.

Hello! Teacher Rebecca,
Could you please explain me the usage of Being+Past Participle? For example,
I look forward to being interviewed on the current affairs programme.
She was afraid of being accused of a crime which she did not commit.
In these sentences I see the uses of BEING INTERVIEWED and BEING ACCUSED. What do they mean? Can I use TO INTERVIEW and TO ACCUSE instead of them?
Best regards,
Victor [From Myanmar]
Victor
Long explanation which I can;t get into here; sorry, so please consult a grammar book, but in essence in these sentences you cannot use the infinitive. I know English is challenging, but then, aren’t all languages? My best wishes to you.

Hi Rebeca, I’m a teacher now, but I was a student many years ago. I was studing for many years in order to be what I wanted to be… I have been studing a lot of things in my life… so I think I am a student still.
Are correct these sentences? I don’t know if I write what I want to mind :(
antoniojunq
it’s a serious problem, dont you think? :)
antoniojunq
“…in order to be what I wanted to be….” — I think here should be “who” — “to be who I wanted to be” not “what” because “what” refers to things :D
“Are correct these sentences?” — It should be “Are these sentences correct?”
I’m not sure about tenses because I have problems with perfect and perfect continuous tenses. But surprisingly, I got 10/10 in the quiz. You should change the form of the quiz because this is the hardest thing that I’m dealing with, and I got 10/10 :D
morfik
Thanks Morfik :)
antoniojunq
Congratulations, the first paragraph was correct.
The second paragraph had some errors.
Are correct these sentences?

Dear mom Rebecca,
I would like to thank you for all your tolerant , you are the one who has inspired me , you let me know the word ” where there is a will , there is a way ” Before I found Engvid my English wasn’t that great and even now it’s not like the best, but it gets better ,,,every time after I finished your lesson, it make me more confident to peak with foreigner,
I really love your teaching style, especially the way you explain !!!
Next time if you don’t mind I would like you to make a lesson about ” how to introduce your self when you are in the first day of your work” what statement you should say and should not say ,
and if you have time could you please give me a hint here ..I am going to start my first full time job in my life next months, help me please ..
Best regards and thanks
vilayphone99
good luck!
mahdjoub
Thanks for your kind words.
How you introduce yourself depends on who you are speaking to. If it’s a formal situation or someone in a higher position, then you have to be more formal. This can be done by making samll changes. For example, you can say:
“Hello, my name is Jack Jones.”
Informally, you might say,
Hi, my name’s Jack.
Hope this helps a little. You might also benefit from watching my lesson on the secret to successful socializing. All the best with your new job!
Rebecca
Sorry, I am typing too fast! I meant “small changes”!

Thanks Ms. for the great lessons, but i have a Question.
Can i use the word”health”. He’s health is better now. is it correct? i’m wiathing for your answer.
ibrahim20
Describe what you want to say.
“He’s health is better now.” — I’m not sure what you wanted to say, but I think you wanted to describe someone’s health condition. If so, your sentence is incorrect You could say:
— “He feels better now.”
— “He is in better health. ( or “health condition”)
— “His health is better now. (or “health condition”) — Notice here that I used “his” not “he’s”.
If I’m wrong somewhere, please correct me. :)
And one question — Do we put a comma before the word “now”?
morfik
Your comments are all correct. No, no comma is needed before the word now. Thanks for your help and best wishes.
Rebecca
Rebecca you are one of my favorite teachers in this website! Mirfik your English is good. Thank you for the explanation. That’s very detail.I am new in here, recently found this website and it is very useful. Now I am tring to watch these lessions every day even during my working hours.
Gloria
Thnxxx Ms. You have right, Comma befor now wasn’t corect, but i want to use the word”health” to a person who is in hospital and she is going to be better and better, so can make a sentence like” Hi’s health is better now” or can you make a sentence for me, please. again, thanks a lot for the answer!!!
ibrahim20
I hope you feel better soon.
or
I am sure you will feel better soon.
or
I wish you a speedy recovery.
All these sentences would work. Good luck, Ibrahim.
Rebecca
Dear Rebecca I have a question:
Someone got married in 2000, and this person got a devorse in 2010. So, this person can say: I …. married for 10 yers. And this person must use witch tense: Past simple or Past continuous ? This person can’t use Present Perfect because now we have 2012, so he got a devores two yers ago.
Pleas answer!
gregorypl25
“I was married for 10 years.” is correct.
All the best to you!
Rebecca
How about using the Past Perfect Tense, like “I had been married for 10 years.”
mark2013
Hi teahcer Rebecca. Thank you for your wonderful and great way of teaching. I would like to ask regarding gregory’s sentence. On his sentence, does word “health” is a noun or adjective? How about he would say “He is health now.” So what would be the difference of health and healthy? Arw they both adjective?

Do we use the verb “be” in the present perfect continuous tense, or do we use “be” only with present perfect (I’m considering only these two tenses now)? Is there such a thing like “I have been being…”
morfik
We use it in the present perfect tense. That’s enough, right? All the best to you!
Rebecca
Teacher Rebecca. I would like to ask if you don’t mind. Could you please tell me that when using the verb to be we can use adjective, noun and verb right? But if we using verb in present tense it should be continuous right? Examples:
1. Present tense – I work today
2. Past tense – I worked yesterday
3. Present perfect – I have worked yesterday
4. Present perfect continuous- I have been working for 5 months
I hope my sentences are correct. Plaese tell me if any. Thanks

Can you please teach us what is the different between basis and basic, and show us some examples ??
Thank you
Talia-philly
talia
“Basic” is an adjective, which means fundamental, or main, as in:
The basic idea of this game is to get the highest point in the shortest time.
“Basis” is a noun, which means the foundation of something or the reason for something, such as:
On what basis do you claim he stole your wallet?
All the best to you, Talia.

Good question and important difference!
“To make time” means to create time in one’s busy schedule or life to do something for someone.
“To do time” means to spend time in jail for having committed a crime!
“To make do” means to manage without something, or to manage with very little of something. For example,
I don’t really have enough milk for this recipe, but I think I can make do.
Hope that helps! All the best to you.

Thanks Ms. Rebecca for your good teaching…
I got 100%. Here I am asking some tips.
thing is that, I am not a good speaker. But I have too much confidence to speak the people those who are my same level or below my level. I will be smart. But, when I am going to speak with some other people those who are above my level or they are very good at English Speaking, i will afraid. Then, I can’t express any thing. I will say ba ba ba… It’s my problem. As a Trainer, plz provide some tips to avoid this weakness.
Sincerely,
minnu400
Thank you so much. Hitherto, I was under the impression that the words “to be” are to be used in future tenses, like, “The building is to be constructed”; “The letter is to be posted” etc. Now, after this lesson, I learn different things. And, which of the following is correct : “Yesterday, I was tired” and “I was tired, yesterday”.

Dear Rebecca ma’am, You are the best teacher I have ever had.
I am sorry to bother you, (my English is not so strong but I try to write my some queries ) Ma’am, I have problem with the infinitive verb “to be “when I see it in the sentences, I get confuse how to use, when to use and why to use it in the sentences and what is the meaning of that, some sentences I understand but not all. For examples:
• We are happy “to be” back with pinkathon Mumbai2013 powered by Mumbai mirror.
• All systems observed were found “to be” in acceptable running state.
• The shoes are “to be” shined.
• Great men are likely “to be” surrounded by sycophant who want favours.
• Every man likes to flirt with a pretty girl, and every pretty girl likes “to be” flirted with.
• Genelia wanted him to be her husband.
• We want her to be her maid of honor.
• James thinks them to be the musicians.
• We believe her to be the murderer.
Ma’am, I cordially request you to kindly make a video regarding to these sentences, which will help us to understand better then what we understand now;if you do not, kindly explain us as your convince method please please……… I hope it will get better soon.
Thanking you.
Your truly,

Hello ma’am,
Once again I m not sure about the infinitive verb “TO BE” yet.
Can’t you solve this problem clearly? You don’t know about it.
I appreciate your teaching from hart. If you don’t want to explain me about it tell me, I will not comment again.
I understand that you don’t have enough time to solve this problem. if you can’t understand my questions, I tell you their Names instead of Examples.
Therefore, I made my problem very easy to understand that I have problem with Infinitive “TO BE” with subject as well as without subject.
Actually, I asked some people who know about English, but They couldn’t explain me.
I know your name is Rebecca Ezekiel
Thanking you.

Hi Rebbeca, first of all many thanks to teach us amazing lessons and specially about the common mistakes. I try to watch ur lessons daily. My grammar is too bad. Only I am confident in present/past/future simple. I didn’t get a point in this lesson that in present perfect some time we use for example I have worked.(we r using have with the 3rd form of verb) and sometime we use have been working.(here we are using have been with verb+ing )and sometime have been married ( have been with the 3 rd form of verb). I am totally confused which form of verb we use in present perfect? and which helping verb we use I mean have or have been. Please please clarify this point.
Many thanx.

very nice lesson mam, but i have a question about tenses you have teach, can we use “been” in present perfect tense ? because normally “have been or has been” are used in present perfect continuous tense. as you teach that present perfect tense is only used to show the work which has done, instead of this we use present continuous tense in the cases in which we start work in the past and still continued in present.
thanks in advance.

… I am GOOD … :D
Thank u Teacher …. :) :) :)
I’m good.
Interesting lesson.
thanks.
You were right Rebecca when you mentioned the sources of mistakes when using the verb To Be, your first language.
For instance, Spanish and Portuguese native speakers tend to use the verb To Have instead of To Be when talking about AGE.
Good review of the verb To Be.
Good luck D@sun, you’re good in English. :P
thanks mate :P
you are a wonderful instructor for non-native speakers, so i appreciate your glamorous duty
Hello, Rebecca! Do native speakers use Present Perfect a lot in a spoken language? I heard that you only use Past Simple, almost never use Perfect Tences.
Could you pls tell me the meaning of below sentences :
1.She has been working in the garden all afternoon.
2. She has worked in the garden all afternoon.
Assume that I am saying these sentence in night.
paras11213 1)if you assume these sentences at night then first sentence was wrong because has been means still action is going on so where as the second sentence you are telling about the action which was completed in the afternoon offcourse long past so its better to keep in past simple even though specific time indication was not mentioned but it implies past.
1. Present perfect
– Because this sentence means that she is still on.
2. Past simple
– She has completed her job in the garden the whole afternoon.
Please don’t hesitate to correct me if i’m wrong.
i got 10 correct out of 10.

Thanks) Have a good Holiday!
Thanks for correcting my quiz.
Thank you ,teacher.I want to know the difference between present perfect and present perfect continous.
Hello! Excuse me, but in the first sentence present perfect is like past simple, has means of finished action. Why dont we just use past simple?
hello, rebecca!your way of teaching is very good
A
very good lesson to understand the use of to be. I’d like to know if the past simple is more frequent than present perfect. Thanks
It may be that the past simple is used more often, but it also depends who you talk to and how well they speak! My best wishes to you.
thank you :)
Excellant teaching god bless you.

There are many good books to help you improve your English vocabulary. You can study from such books and also read and listen to English every chance you get. The main point is that you have the desire to improve and so I am sure you will find many ways to do so. All the best to you.
may you live long teacher, i always respect my teacher who teach me one word.
Thanks my techer: thanks to this qwestion i like it
Thanks a lot!
I haven’t practice my basic grammar a lot since I graduated from high school…
Long explanation which I can;t get into here; sorry, so please consult a grammar book, but in essence in these sentences you cannot use the infinitive. I know English is challenging, but then, aren’t all languages? My best wishes to you.
MASHA ALLAH
“THIS SENTENCE MUSLIMS SAY IT,WHEN THEY IMPRESS
Mrs. Rebecca , Thank you very much for such an excellent lesson, It has been very improtant one to practice the three tenses. I got 10 out of 10.
I like your way of teaching, it is wonderful thank you very much
Hi Rebeca, I’m a teacher now, but I was a student many years ago. I was studing for many years in order to be what I wanted to be… I have been studing a lot of things in my life… so I think I am a student still.
Are correct these sentences? I don’t know if I write what I want to mind :(
it’s a serious problem, dont you think? :)
Thanks Morfik :)
Congratulations, the first paragraph was correct.
The second paragraph had some errors.
Are correct these sentences?
should be
Are these sentences correct?
I don’t know if I write what I want to mind :(
Here, maybe you wanted to say,
I don’t know if I write what I have in mind.
All the best to you!
Hello…
100%
Refering to your explanation about how is the verb to be used talking about religion, Wouldn´t it be the correct answer for the last question of the quiz “I am Muslim” instean of “I am a Muslim”?
Thanks a lot
Jone
Refering to your explanation about how is the verb to be used talking about religion, Wouldn´t it be the correct answer for the last question of the quiz “I am Muslim” instean of “I am a Muslim”?
Best regards and thanks
good luck!
Sorry, I am typing too fast! I meant “small changes”!
You got 10 correct out of 10.
:D
I really enjoyed.
Thanks…
thank you

You’re right. In Indonesian language, there is no to be verbs. Consequently, to say I am good in Indonesian, you should say: “Aku baik”.
Thanks for the lesson, Fariz. My best to you.

thanks rebecca.I got 7 correct out of 10.
thank you teacher, i got 10 correct out of 10
Thank you…
Thanks Ms. for the great lessons, but i have a Question.
Can i use the word”health”. He’s health is better now. is it correct? i’m wiathing for your answer.
Your comments are all correct. No, no comma is needed before the word now. Thanks for your help and best wishes.
Rebecca you are one of my favorite teachers in this website! Mirfik your English is good. Thank you for the explanation. That’s very detail.I am new in here, recently found this website and it is very useful. Now I am tring to watch these lessions every day even during my working hours.
Thnxxx Ms. You have right, Comma befor now wasn’t corect, but i want to use the word”health” to a person who is in hospital and she is going to be better and better, so can make a sentence like” Hi’s health is better now” or can you make a sentence for me, please. again, thanks a lot for the answer!!!
I hope you feel better soon.
or
I am sure you will feel better soon.
or
I wish you a speedy recovery.
All these sentences would work. Good luck, Ibrahim.
“I was married for 10 years.” is correct.
All the best to you!
How about using the Past Perfect Tense, like “I had been married for 10 years.”
Hi teahcer Rebecca. Thank you for your wonderful and great way of teaching. I would like to ask regarding gregory’s sentence. On his sentence, does word “health” is a noun or adjective? 1OO MY FIRST TEST :, CONGRATULATIONS FOR ME!
I like your teaching
I’m very happy! I have useful information so much
Do we use the verb “be” in the present perfect continuous tense, or do we use “be” only with present perfect (I’m considering only these two tenses now)? Is there such a thing like “I have been being…”
We use it in the present perfect tense. That’s enough, right? All the best to you!
Teacher Rebecca. I would like to ask if you don’t mind. Could you please tell me that when using the verb to be we can use adjective, noun and verb right? But if we using verb in present tense it should be continuous right? Examples:
1. Present tense – I work today
2. Past tense – I worked yesterday
3. Present perfect – I have worked yesterday
4. Present perfect continuous- I have been working for 5 months
I hope my sentences are correct. Plaese tell me if any. Thanks

Thanks)))
thanks !!!! it’s very impressive

Sincerely,
Thank you so much.
Thank you teacher. :) new student here

Your truly,
Vishal

Hello, I admire you a lot Rebecca. Please, could you help me to know how to get prepare for the TOEFL exam, and tell me some strong point to use in the Essay (writing part of Toefl)?
with respect Adela
Your truly,
Vishal

Many thanx.
i have got 100%, thank you very ma’am Rebecca.

If I could translate to English, in Portuguese we say : I have 43 years. I had 23 years when I moved to China. For exemple…
But in Portuguese we don´t say ” I tired” . We say “I´m tired” . “Eu estou cansada”
Rebecca, I love your lessons!
Yep! You’re right Adi, we Spanish speakers make the same mistake when talking about AGE.
How about the expression “Tengo sueño” (I’m sleepy)? How do you put it in Portuguese?

Hi Rebecca, nice lesson .I have a question: If I want to express that I’ve been a student for 5 years but now I’m no more a student, how can I say it? thank you so much
very nice lesson mam, but i have a question about tenses you have teach, can we use “been” in present perfect tense ? because normally “have been or has been” are used in present perfect continuous tense. as you teach that present perfect tense is only used to show the work which has done, instead of this we use present continuous tense in the cases in which we start work in the past and still continued in present.
thanks in advance.
First time to leave a comment. I enjoy watching Rebecca teaching grammar, it’s very clear. Thank you.

The subtitles of this video is not matching to Rebecca’s speech. It is so awful because it just confused and, as for me, prevent to develop and understand a sentence of her speech.
This lesson is from before we started adding captions, so it’s just Youtube’s auto-generated ones. Sorry :(
