academic writing
? If you’re in school or university, you must know the difference between general English and academic English. Watch this important lesson to avoid the most common mistakes students make in academic writing. In your own language, the difference between these two modes of writing might not be that great, but in English, there are a lot of differences depending on the context. So even if you know your grammar and write a correct sentence, you might still be wrong because the structure or tone was not appropriate for an academic setting! Watch this video and learn how to write correctly and get higher grades in an academic environment.

Academic report writing demands the development of specific skills such as the use of formal language, knowing how to cite your different sources properly, and how to develop clearly your ideas in the body of the report, to name just a few.
Undoubtely, these tips will help us to develop better and better academic reports.

Find an energetic and experienced teacher, join a class, read, write, listen, and use English as often as you can! If you are determined, you can achieve amazing results, but it does take a lot of effort. Have fun with it and keep saying “I speak English” every day, so you can start thinking of yourself as an English speaker. All the best to you.

2. Which of the following sentences would be inappropriate in an academic paper?
The committee can’t understand the reason for the labour dispute.
The committee cannot understand the reason for the labour dispute.
Can you explai why the second sentence was not right. ( whereas, in the first sentence they have used contraction)
Because the main word in the question “inappropriate” so you had to choose the first sentence…
You are right. The first sentence would be inappropriate because a contraction was used. The second sentence is fine. All the best!
I got 90%. Thank you Rebecca it is a smart lesson.

9/10 In the second question, I made a precipitated reading and as a consequence, I choosed wrong answer. Of course, we must never use contractions.
In conclusion, if you have an academic IELTS in your horizon, you ought to speak and write English, formal and objective.
According to this video, the considerable issue for me are that: 1) I do not know too much high level English; 2) I do not know which word is belongs to high level English…
Hi Rebecca, and everybody,
I was teached to write as you mention, but one thing disturbed me in the last days, it is about this quote:
“Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you’ve been to college.”
Kurt Vonnegut
What do you think about it? THANK YOU
Well, famous people can afford to make jokes! In real life, which tends to have pretty standardized expectations, it’s not so bad to write like you’ve been to college. All the best!
This lesson has considerable improved my knowledge of Academic English. Once again excellent teaching. Thank you.
I got 9 out of 10 this time, not bad, I should be more carefully with academic English.

Appreciated. very helpful.
Thanks for such an informative lecture. Although, I have done my studies with english as a medium of learning, but yes I find a gap. Essentially, I find this gap during speaking sessions or at the time of writing a research paper- an academic part. I believe in myself that I can improve both my writing and speaking part with your informative lectures. May God bless you – Amen.
Thank you kindly. You do write well. I wish you all the best.

The committee cannot understand the reason for the labour dispute.(correct as per your lesson tells)
Teacher Rebecca can you please justify above question? as you taught us in the lesson that avoid contractions in academic english use “is not” instead of “isn’t” but your above answer of question confuses me…Help!!

Hello Rebecca,
I hope you will be able to read my comment because this is the only way I can ask you a question. I got perfect 10 on the quiz. By the way, my question is related to the IELTS exam. In IELTS academic writing are we still need to avoid idioms? Or it is just applicable to Universities and colleges?
Thank you for taking time reading my comment.
