Do native speakers have a hard time understanding you? Even if you know grammar and vocabulary, your pronunciation can prevent native speakers from understanding what you’re saying. This lesson will help you with the difference between the short
and long a
sounds in American English. You’ll have a chance to listen to the difference between these two sounds and to practice your pronunciation with me, using common English words and sentences. If you don’t understand the difference between these sounds, it can be confusing to the people you’re speaking to. In some cases, it can change the entire meaning of your sentence! Watch and practice with this easy class to master these sounds.

Excellent lesson on pronunciation Alex. A long/short vowel sound can make a real difference in meaning.
Once I was told that the minimal pair technique is a helpful approach to contrast sounds and meanings. Is that really so Alex?
That’s it for me now. See you round.
Well, in fact this is the technique you used in today’s video to contrast sounds and meaning.
As far as I could see, teaching pronunciation is not that easy.It demands special abilities on the part of the teacher, doesn’t it? You’re a gifted teacher Alex.
It goes beyond any doubt. Thanks
Hi Alex
Glad to see you again !
Thanks, Regino. Minimal pairs are a big problem, and it’s why pronunciation practice is so important.
Like anything, pronunciation requires a specific skill set and knowledge. I’m still learning as well. :)
Hello Alex. Thank you for this video. I
Sorry; I’ll continue: I’ve got a question. What does jaws mean in this sentence: …by the bloodthirsty jaws. Please help me! Thanks.
Thanks for your lesson!

Haha. The pain means it’s working and you’re improving!
Thanks, Alex! …Can I ask one thing about your T-shirt? Is it Kaonashi in Spirited Away??
Yep! It’s No Face (English name) from Spirited Away, which is one of my favourite animated films.

Brilliant teacher Alex,
If someone else teach this kind of lessons is quite boring to learn. But with you it’s enjoyable.
Thanks for making pronunciation based vedio.
I start learn englich with you Alex. it’s will for me thank you so much for the lesson.
Thanks to you my teacher that was a great lesson
Well done .You have a sweet soul
Really teacher Alex deserves a grant to follow his lessons, I would invest money to learn English if I were rich but I always lose my savings doing stupid things like flying. It’s an important choice to know the difference between short and long vowels because there are more than two “a”, I believe they are five in total, a hard work to enquiry and identify all of these sounds, you have to listen to a lot of teachers with patience and then practice with your friends and people but the time is the problem. If I could, I would listen to the English language 24 hours by day, it’s a utopian idea to do that. Thanks a lot, teacher Alex, I will be one that will be very grateful for your effort and I will be a supporter in the future but now I am unemployed and I need to find a good job.
Excuse me ,how I start learning English I forgett every thing about English vocabulary gramer listening
