auxiliary verbs
— also known as helper verbs
. They are extra verbs in the sentence that don’t usually contribute to the main meaning of the sentence. They usually just show you what verb tense the sentence is. I explain everything you need to know about them, and how to find them in a sentence. Let’s get started!

Jade,
thank you for your help…
got 10 XD !!!
It was a good review of English tenses and auxiliary verbs Jade.
For me the most valuable tip for this lesson was not to translate helper verbs into your first language.
So,to avoid confusion, please don’t do so.
Many thanks for this video-lesson Jade.
Regards.
Thank you, Sensei, for your advice.

Could you help me to state the difference between the modal verbs MUST and SHOULD, and come up with a single context to explain both of them to lower intermediate students?
All modal verbs have more than one meaning – ‘can’ means ability – ‘I can swim’ but also asking for something ‘Can I borrow your pen?’. ‘Should’ is mostly used for advice ‘you should take an aspirin’ ‘You should work harder’ but can also mean something is almost certain to happen/not happen ‘the rain should stop soon’, ‘he should be here by now’ . Must is used for strong necessity – I must work harder, You must stop smoking BUT in many cases ‘Have to’ is a safer option. When you get to a higher level you will see what I mean. Must +be means strong possibility/deduction now – ‘Ah! That must be Juan, he said he would ring about now’. Must + present perfect means deduction in the past ‘see that – he must have killed himself’ ‘We must have taken a wrong path as we are lost!’. Modals are extremely powerful ways of modifying a verb so take your time with them. Good luck
thank you for the test , is very interesting

Thank you very much engvid to give us this website
very nice
jade
so good
Jade, thank you for helping us. ;)
Many thanks Jade
this is hard for me ;( im confused about past countinous .
The past continuous has very distinctive uses. 1) We use it to describe a long past activity with another action – the past simple- interrupting it “We were having lunch when we heard the news” “I was working in a bar when I met my future wife”. Not important but a good rule to follow – use ‘when’ with the past simple clause and ‘while’ with the past continuous: We heard the news while we were having lunch” While I was working in a bar I met my wife” . Be careful not to use it without the when – “Last Saturday I was shopping” – to the English this sounds like a start of a story and they will wait for the ‘when…’! Better to say ‘Last Saturday I went shopping” 2) to ask what a person was doing at a specific time in the past “Where were you last night at 8.00?” The past simple ‘What did you do at 8,00 last night” is IMPOSSIBLE to use here! 3) We use it for background information in a story – “it was raining”.
it was very useful for me. thanks…
I got 7/9. I confuse tense :'( :'( :'(
PLEASE remove this lesson as it is almost 100% totally wrong! 1) “I have got..” is NOT present perfect, it is present simple and the ‘got’ is not even a verb in this case! 2) ‘…have been talking ‘pres perfect cont the ‘been’ is not an auxiliary, it is the past participle of ‘be’ . As far as I know you NEVER have two auxiliaries together. 3) The word following a modal is always the important verb? Dangerous rule! see: ‘I could never understand’ – never is not a verb! 4) when translating the main verb is more important than the auxiliary – erm- then ‘ can swim, can’t swim, should swim, have to swim, maybe swimming, might be swimming’ etc all translate the same? NO WAY! The modal has totally modified the verbs meaning! This lesson is total rubbish and very confusing and should have been checked before going online – remove, please!!!!
More on why there are NOT two auxiliaries for one verb. To make an object question we use a question word, auxiliary, subject, verb phrase e.g.: Where do you live? When did you see Peter? What are you doing? To follow Jade’s confusing calling ‘have been’ as two auxiliaries we would have to say ‘What have been you doing?’ So to make the present continuous we use the verb to be as the auxiliary plus the present participle ‘I am doing’ to make the present perfect continuous we use Have as the auxiliary plus past participle of be (been)plus present particle. also what about frequency and other adverbs? these go before the main verb/verb phrase ‘I always eat’ I am always eating…’ I have always eaten’ ‘I have never been to..’ this would not be the case if we follow the rules presented here. ‘I have often been out walking and seen.. would be ‘I have been out often walking and seen…’ Please do not confuse learners! At the end of the video it was stated the main verb follows the modal and the example, was I think, ‘should have given’ yet Jade had just spent 10 minutes explaining ‘have’ was an auxiliary. Very confusing for all – including herself as she looked baffled and quickly moved on. Please remove for all concerned!
nice
Tnx… Very nice class.
Great……..Great…….thx
I see nobody takes any notice that THIS LESSON IS VERY BAD and should NOT be online. Another error: Jade says that ‘Be’ is a linking verb and not very important and not worth translating — maybe in some languages but there are many more where it translates perfectly, oh, and Jade, we use it for state and location. Then later this ‘not important’ verb is now, with Will, the important verb. Huh?? Confused??? Oh and I think it is wrong to call ‘Will’ the future tense – English doesn’t really have such an animal and uses just about everything! Will can also be used as a present tense habit ‘Every evening I’ll feed the cat before myself’.
I am using this video to teach teachers how not to teach and as such it gives ENGVID a bad name. Can’t trust my students to go to the site when you have total rubbish like this on it. AVOID!!!
I agree with you
Do you give a lessons English ? Please inform me .
Thankyou for ur helpful lesson. Btw I found in my english book this statement. ” She has been married for twenty years”. Why it used “has been” for present perfect? You told in video if “has been/have been uses for present perfect continous. So it makes me confuse. I really appreciate if you reply my comment. Thx before:)
It’s the passive voice. She has been married and she is still married now.
very good
Very useful for me, thank ya.
Sorry, does any one got the meaning of” i got 9 out of 9?”
Thank u Jade i have got 9/9
Thanks jade it’s great.
Thanks a lot of
thank you krub
Hello Jade , thanks for your help .
thanxx jade for helping me to learn
Thanks to engvid for appointing two British teachers benjamin and jade…british accent is different when they sound from other teachers…finding a main verb is not an easy task..since I learnt these grammer rules earlier.i can able to identity the main verb…
The problem with students the perfect tense has past participle…as jade said had comes as past particle in main verb as well as aux verb before main verb …go went gone (past participle)..have had had(pastparticiple) students do mistake as hadden as past participle.come came come (past participle)..most of students confused with the verb which used in simple past and they are using past perfect…learning
Tense and past participle really helped me identifying main verb…
i am new student in your marvellous website with kind and marvellous teachers.thanks for all .
I would be proud to say this course and quiz is easy for me, although I didn’t get 100.
:P
Thank you for these video Jade, they are very helpful but it’s very difficult to follow you because you speak very very fast !!!!
Many thanks.
thank you very much. you speak very fast and it is very useful for improving listening.
Hello Jade
really i want thank you so much as your lessons helping me to improve my self day after day.
really thanks so much for your pure English
God Bless You
thank you.
Thank you
Thank you Jade.
Perfect score.
So, Jade, when BE has its full meaning, it’s not an auxiliary verb. “I am a doctor.”
When Be helps to make tense of verb like:
“Joe is working at the moment” then it becomes an auxiliary verb. Is this what you wanted to say?
thank you so much.
jade thanks
Thanks dear Jade your nice lesions are really useful I was really waiting for that explanation but one thing I would like to tell your British accent (dialects) was not that good not that clear for me
Thanks,Jade.
Thanks

9/9 thank you very much.it’s a helpful lesson.
(IMAGINE, I’M MAKING THE BRITISH ACCENT)
WHAT AN ACCENT YOU HAVE THERE. IT WAS A NICE LESSON YOU HAD THERE. I’VE LEARNED SO MUCH, THANKS FOR THE TIPS. HOW I WISH I WOULD BE A BETTER ENGLISH SPEAKER LIKE YOU ALL DO. SO, THATS WHY I NEED TO STUDY, AND WATCH MORE ALL OF YOUR VIDEOS HERE IN ENGVID. :) OH I GOT 8/9 I THOUGHT I PERFECTED IT. GUESS, I NEED TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT ALL OF THIS.
Score 56%, It’s really bad for me. :(, I will go to watch the video again, then I should be make the Quiz again.
Thank you.
No, yo creo que no.
1. 56% está por encima de la media.
2. I think that your problem is related to tenses+auxiliary.
In short:
1. You must watch the video again. ( Or: You should watch…)
2. Then you should learn all the present, past, perfect and continuous tenses.
3. You should make/do the Quiz again. ( Why ‘should be’).
Un saludo desde España. No me malinterpretes, sólo quiero ayudar con un consejo.
Thanks dear Jade
Thanks got 89%.
thanks dear jade
It is hard to me …I will try again

Could I give you some advice, Jade? The information of your lesson is great, but your speaking doesn’t flow enough for me. I felt bad when I was listening to your class. Your speaking was frequently interrupted, even if I have tried to focus on your speaking but you often interrupted sound making me feel anxious.
