Thank you very much Rebecca. I enjoy your lessons always. When you were telling about N 5 “My wife is an engineer”, you said: “you do need to have a verb” Can you explain please, when I should say ” do need” and when it is enough just to say “you need” ? I always confused about “DO” before the verb. Thank you.

The word “do” is used for emphasis, to make a stronger statement. My best to you.

hello madam, I want to ask u in the 9th one She ___________________ last summer.
a. has started working here
b. started working here
the correct answer is b ,but it may possible that she is still working there ,pls tell me the reason why b is correct. i got 90 .Thank you. God bless you
rajpal90
When you mention a finished time, such as last summer, then you have to use the Simple Past Tense, as in “She started working here”. In fact, you cannot mention a finished time with the Present Perfect Tense, which is why answer a is incorrect. Hope this helps. All the best to you.
Rebecca
I often get confused between IS and HAS
For example:The bread is perished or The bread has perished.
The shop is closed or The shop has closed.
younus123
thanks a lot .
libyano
MY DEAR INDIAN, WHEN YOU USE THE WORD’LAST YEAR’ THEN YOU DON’T HAVE TO USE ‘HAVE’ OR ‘HAS’ IN THE SENTENCE. WELL, NOW YOU MIGHT ASK ‘WHY’ THEN I’D LIKE TO TELL YOU THAT IT’S KINDA RULE.
I HOPE YOU GOT IT, DIDN’T YOU!
IF IT HELPED YOU THEN KINDLY INFORM ME VIA COMMENT.

John, when did you realise that the Three Kings didn’t exist?
or
John, when had you realised that the Three Kings didn’t exit?
Which one is correct the Past simple or the Past perfect?
I was watching the basketball game the other day and the interlocutor said: “Trends flame out quickly”.
What does that mean?
Thanks
henry19
When did you realize is correct, because you used the word when. In a more sophisticated sense, the second sentence is also correct.
Trends flame out quickly means that popular things lose their popularity fast.
All the best to you.

Hi Rebecca,
I’m from Brazil, Recife.
I have a question with the sentence number 4:
1 – She has been IN London for 5 months.
or
2 – She has been TO London for 5 months.
Which one is right? IN or TO ?
weydson
1 is correct. `Go to London`, but `be in London`.
2longyears
2longyears,
The question “HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO LONDON?” exist and this question use the preposition TO. Please, check out this question in your books. This was the reason for my question for Rebecca. We have PRESENT PERFECT, using the verb to be (BEEN), plus the preposition TO. I would like a answer from Rebecca.
weydson
Yes, you can ask “Have you ever been to London?” but the answer would just be Yes or No. If you say yes, then you could go on to explain that you were IN London for 5 months. You could not really say you have been to London for 5 months. It’s not used that way. Thanks for your interest and my best regards to you.
Rebecca
Rebecca,
Thank you very much for your answer. What about your sentence number 4? You have used the preposition IN, like this:
She has been IN London for 5 months.
Could you please explain this sentence?
Thank you again and my best regards to you.

Sorry, I have to leave my comment here. ‘ clothing’ was one on your list among the uncountable nouns. So I gave my answer ‘ much clothing ‘ rather than ‘ many clothing ‘.

Dear Mam.. First of all i would like to say my hearty thanks for your effort. But i have 1 doubts in the quiz questions.
1.”she’s been engaged to him for a year now.The wedding will probably soon”.’Year’ is a vowel but in this question it is used ‘a’ instead of ‘an’before year. Why ? Please reply me Rebecca mam…
sreekanthkrish
No, there is no word starting with ‘Y’ before which we use the ‘an’ article, always remember (a+y…) except for vowel group (a e i u o), we would use either ‘a’ or ‘an’ for words beginning with ‘H’ and ‘U’, here it depends on the word and precisely the first sound; U(e.g. an UMbrella, a University, an Unknown, a Unit..) H(e.g. an Honor, a Humble, a Human, an Honest…)
omaxios
Thanks for the lesson. And wish u all the best.

Hi,,thanks dear Rebecca is very useful for us but i have a problem i know to many words but i don’t know how i used when i speak with other people?
Dlpak
Good! 100 thanks Rebecca
jojupe10
thank you so much Rebecca, however I have a question about the second sentence. It looks like a passive voice sentence.
“A dentist engage to her”
-> She is engaged (to)(by) a dentist.(I’m not sure about the preposition)
in this case, the verb “engage” is the same meaning with the adjective “engaged” or not?
hoangluan
Let me spell this out for you if you do not mind. In the first place the verb ‘engage’ has two meanings, 1. to be in a espousal relationship before getting married, 2. to get involved or participated in a (job, situation or field). This obviously illustrate your confusion between passive/active voice you may either use (She’s/has been engaged to a noble man / She’s/has been engaged in / with a workteam)
To make it easier for you, it is the preposition that would make you guess what meaning is being delivered or implied – To vs With or In.
Hope my reasoning has been rather clarified.
omaxios
90%.. yup, I still got it..
Thank you Rebecca..

My best to you.
goodmorning mam,i have a small doubt,in the second question “she is engaged with a dentist”,the word engaged is a past verb, but why we used “is”.Hope you reply,Thank you.

AND PL TELL ME THESE SENTENCES GIVEN BELOW ARE CORRECT.
TO TELL A CUSTOMER TO HOLD THE LINE ;
” PLEASE BE ON LINE'” &
AFTER RETRIEVING ,
” THANK YOU FOR BEING ON HOLD “
“Please stay on the line” is the correct thing to say. The second one is fine. All the best to you.
hello madam, I want to ask u in the 9th one She ___________________ last summer.
a. has started working here
b. started working here
the correct answer is b ,but it may possible that she is still working there ,pls tell me the reason why b is correct. i got 90 .Thank you. God bless you
When you mention a finished time, such as last summer, then you have to use the Simple Past Tense, as in “She started working here”. In fact, you cannot mention a finished time with the Present Perfect Tense, which is why answer a is incorrect. Hope this helps. All the best to you.
I often get confused between IS and HAS
For example:The bread is perished or The bread has perished.
The shop is closed or The shop has closed.
thanks a lot .
THANKING YOU!

Btw. very helpful lesson, thanks!
I need your help.
Thanks
When did you realize is correct, because you used the word when. In a more sophisticated sense, the second sentence is also correct.
Trends flame out quickly means that popular things lose their popularity fast.
All the best to you.
You know very very well studient’s mistakes so please would you write some more commun mistakes and explain us how to correct them ? Thank you very much Kind regards Francis

Hi Rebecca,
I’m from Brazil, Recife.
I have a question with the sentence number 4:
1 – She has been IN London for 5 months.
or
2 – She has been TO London for 5 months.
Which one is right? IN or TO ?
1 is correct. `Go to London`, but `be in London`.
2longyears,
The question “HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO LONDON?” exist and this question use the preposition TO. Please, check out this question in your books. This was the reason for my question for Rebecca. We have PRESENT PERFECT, using the verb to be (BEEN), plus the preposition TO. I would like a answer from Rebecca.
Yes, you can ask “Have you ever been to London?” but the answer would just be Yes or No. If you say yes, then you could go on to explain that you were IN London for 5 months. You could not really say you have been to London for 5 months. It’s not used that way. Thanks for your interest and my best regards to you.
Rebecca,
Thank you very much for your answer. What about your sentence number 4? You have used the preposition IN, like this:
She has been IN London for 5 months.
Could you please explain this sentence?
Thank you again and my best regards to you.
Great Lesson!

Thanks for the lesson. And wish u all the best.
im going to my ielts exame 21 sep…how can i get good result??????????/

Rebecca thank you very much for your helpful classes.can you please teach about all the tenses with rules…i can’t see such a class here about all tenses..please advice….
Hi Teacher Rebecca. Hi everybody. I am a new student here. I am asking for help to make my English better. Thank you. :)
i am sorry . one things i could not understand here well. why there is a “is” before past participle form of verb.
in second line. or it will be has rather is.
Hi,,thanks dear Rebecca is very useful for us but i have a problem i know to many words but i don’t know how i used when i speak with other people?
Good! 100 thanks Rebecca
thank you so much Rebecca, however I have a question about the second sentence. It looks like a passive voice sentence.
“A dentist engage to her”
-> She is engaged (to)(by) a dentist.(I’m not sure about the preposition)
in this case, the verb “engage” is the same meaning with the adjective “engaged” or not?
Let me spell this out for you if you do not mind. In the first place the verb ‘engage’ has two meanings, 1. to be in a espousal relationship before getting married, 2. to get involved or participated in a (job, situation or field). This obviously illustrate your confusion between passive/active voice you may either use (She’s/has been engaged to a noble man / She’s/has been engaged in / with a workteam)
To make it easier for you, it is the preposition that would make you guess what meaning is being delivered or implied – To vs With or In.
Hope my reasoning has been rather clarified.
90%.. yup, I still got it..
Thank you Rebecca..
I got 100 out of 100.. I really don’t know what should I say to you Ms. Rebeca I just wanna say God bless you :)
