Is “were” because there’s the word “you”. For “I”, “He”, “She”, “It” we use “WAS”. For “You”, “They”, and “We” we use “WERE”. Remember:
“am – is”—–> “WAS”
“are”———> “WERE”

Maybe this is a little “crazy” but in practise sentence #1 what if you are speaking about, let’s say, John Williams & Charles Williams, couldn’t you say: “Mr Williams were here yesterday” if you are referring to both of them?. As far as I know, Mr has no plural form.
