Dear Emma, Thank you very for your great first video lesson and I appreciate your efforts to make us understand the topics. You not only look great, but your teaching is also fantastic. Wish you good luck in your career and hoping to see you very often. I think, you are the second young teacher besides Valen. I love all the teachers on the Engvid.

Daya Rao

If yuo ask me Emma, it is form me very useful lesson:)))Thank you! Good luck:)

Agnieszka

Wellcome mam,
Seriously i was not able to get the goal of the topic. Also teacher you were looking confused but i am sure with the passage of time you will be polished.

Good Luck

Aftab Hussain

Thanks for your feedback :). The goal of the video is to give you some common expressions you can use in everyday conversation. They help you to organize your ideas in a conversation and keep the conversation flowing smoothly.

Additionally, “If you ask me” is a great way to introduce your opinion.

    Hope that helps!

    Emma

Emma I hope that you’re my teacher one day because I do not understand anything of my teacher and I’m bored with it to learn English even though it’s not the native speakers of the language and always focus on grammatical rules and only one day going to commit suicide because of the way of learning English
ha ah ha ha ha ha ha

      basemmoustafa2010

So so so so very nice class and useful things to improve language skills!

I don´t leave to say that you are SO SO SO SO SO SO SO BEAUTIFUL TEACHER! Thanks!

      Fabio

Emma, if you ask me, this lesson looks is very very useful especially if you live in the west. As an ESL myself, i always see those speaking English as a first language get mixed up when discussing stuff. Sometimes they get frustrated. I see it in their faces. With this lesson. I now know the reason is-i dont use the 3 conversational phrases. I jump to topics and get them mad !! haha..this problem is know over. It is easy to avoid people if they dont follow your converstaion…Thanks much and God bless your work. Please come with more or sweet stuff like this

I really enjoyed the lesson. I love the way you speak, so I’d really apreciate if you could do a video about pronunciation. Especially for the words that end in -ty like minority, party, etc.

By the way you were great I loved it and welcome to engvid.com

Martin

If you ask me, This is a good lesson, speaking of this lesson means mastering three expressions.
As I was saying, the three expressions are:
– If you ask me, . . .
– Speaking of, . . .
– As I was saying, . . .

aldammak

If you ask me, I recommend taking quiz, speaking of the quiz I got 8/8

Hi Emma!! Uauuu You are a very nice teacher. Even though it is truth I woud like to give a sugestion. The next time speak slower. Do not forget most the students are not American. By the way, is it possible to talk to you on skype??

CREBIO

Thank you for the suggestion. I appreciate it. The best way to ask me questions or to send me your comments is on this message board. I look forward to hearing from you again. :)

welcom Emma.nice to meet u on Engvid.com.congratulation on your new job.

ahmed69

Hi,, welcome emma
i want to ask you a question about speaking of , is that the same mean with (by the way)?

meme515

I’m glad you’ve asked this question. “By the way” and “Speaking of” are very similar. They are synonyms.

    Example 1:

Speaker 1: “How are your brother and his wife doing?”

Speaker 2: “Great! Speaking of my brother and his wife, have you seen their new house yet? It’s huge!”

    Example 2:

Speaker 1: “How are your brother and his wife doing?”

Speaker 2: ” Great! By the way, have you seen their new house yet? It’s huge!”

“By the way” and “Speaking of” are known as linking words. They connect what has already been said to what will be said.

    Emma

hi madam i need to improve my speaking and can i do for this

      prince

Hi! Speaking of, I personally understand that use the expression´Speaking of´ is more formal and the expression By the way is more casual, am I right?

      GTZ6

Nice! Thank you so much, I really appreciate it.
      Have a good time,

      Nkuhani

Thanks for the lesson Emma!
I have a question about the expression “speaking of” and I sometimes hear people useing ” speaking of which……” Are they same meaning?
Is the following example correct?

A: I haven’t been to the restaurant for a while.
B: Speaking of which, did you know that they started lunch time buffet since this summer?

I would appriciate your help, Emma! :) :) :)

XxReaxX

    Great question!

Using your example, you can use either “Speaking of the restaurant,” or “Speaking of which,”. They mean the same thing. Both refer to something that has just been said.

In your example, the “which” replaces the phrase “the restaurant”.

    Emma

Though I knew everything you’ve told, the lesson was useful.

tahon

I start my first lesson on Engvid with your video. Your lesson and those very useful expressions encourage me to try to use them as much as I can. If you ask me, I will continue my improvement through this website. Speaking of practical expressions is necessary for those who want to learn En professionally. As I was saying I try to apply this new expressions and I realize that I need to go back and watch the video again.

Ellie

Thanks again everyone for your comments. It’s great to see some of you are using the expressions already.

Bobdacir15, thank you so much for sharing your comment with us. Having the confidence to speak is one of the major things language students struggle with.

I recommend watching Ronnie’s lessons, “Speak with confidence” and “How to keep a conversation going”.

Hi Emma! It’s a pleasure to see you here on EngVid among these wonderful teachers. I truely like your way of speaking, you speak really, as you used to say, “smoothly”. When I first saw you here, I was afraid that I would not be able to understand you, but now I don’t doubt anymore. Your first performance was magnificent, first impression is the most important, and that’s why you became my favorite teacher now. It used to be Ronnie, but no longer. You are such a great person, and I wish you all of luck in you career. Look forward to learn from you. Take care!

Everything ok but please speak little bit slower, Emma;)

Skandik

Welcome Miss Emma, you´re a very good teacher, if you ask me you´re very pretty too, speaking of do you have a boyfriend?

Eduardo

Lesson 1: Don’t ask questions like that.

    engVid

Lesson 2: You must get used to that, or you can simply prevent this to happen by disapproving comments such as previous one. Quite simple :)

      Maki

        +1 ha haaa.. gotcha..!!!
        ;)
speaking of disapproval, i thought all comments would go into selection as my 1st ever comment here was pending for approval. but then i was surprised coz the 2nd comment n so on just goin’ thru right away.. how could that happen? or it’s just how it is?
i don’t know if u’ve noticed or not there’s a bad comment n i just wanna knock that person out if i were u..

        gimmehunny

      i agree.

Dear Miss Emma,
I warmly welcome you in the engvid programme
I also like your lessons very much, please keep it continue with new lessons, I request you to present kid lessons. But i miss Valen very much

Mumtaz

I do understand that ‘As I was saying’ never changes; however, I often listen/read people saying: Like I was saying, Like you said before, and so on. Although I’m sticking to As in both scenarios, I’d like to know: Is that acceptable (being a slang or something) or just plain wrong?

If you ask me, this is a great lesson.

lmunhoz00

    Hi Imunhoz00,

I’m glad you noticed these phrases.
“Like I was saying” and “like you said earlier” are both acceptable.

    Emma

Welcome Emma. Speaking of nice Lesson your teaching skills also good. as i was saying it’s a nice lesson if you ask me good to have teachers like you.

Narendra

Hi Miss Emma,
Welcome…

tavert0489

birqan

Hello my new teacher Emma. Welcome to Engvid. Great lesson! Congratulations. Please, do a lesson about how to use somebody, someone, anybody, anyone in affirmative, negatives and questions sentences. Thank you so much…

juantrejos27

Check out Rebecca’s lesson, “Common English Errors: Someone, Anyone, No one?”

She covers how to use someone, somebody, anyone and anybody.

    Hope that helps!

    Emma

I couldent cach the videos ever n never,
Is it possible 2 u 2 explain what “speaking of” exactly mean plz?!

fatiima

    Hi Fatima,

Please look at the following conversation example.

    Fred:
“My favourite actress is Jennifer Aniston. I think she is a great actress and very funny.”

    Jane:
“Speaking of Jennifer Aniston, I just heard she was named the most beautiful woman of all time.”

Subject 1 = Jennifer Aniston is Fred’s favourite actress.

Subject 2 = Jennifer Aniston won an award for being the most beautiful woman.

“Speaking of Jennifer Aniston” connects subject 2 back to subject 1.
The subjects are a little different, but both are linked to Jennifer Aniston.

We use “speaking of” to show a link between two slightly different subjects.

Other similar phrases include “by the way” and “incidentally”.

    Emma

Thank you very much !

Eliete

Greetz Emma.

Thank you for those vital pointers and tips on how to keep the conversation flowing. But there still work to be done! We all need to brush up our languages.
If you ask me, It would be marvelous if you included some useful expressions and techniques on building your statements based on questions you are asked during IELTS, TOEFL test or whatever evaluation you are doing i.e. paraphrasing or revolving the issue form a spectrum of perspectives such as economic, religious, ethical, social etc.

Thank you in advance. I shall stay tunned!

PS And yes, you’ve got an endearing smile! :)
Welcome on board.

Hello Emma, I want to say thanks for the lesson. I learned a lot about the expressions. I’d like that you’ll post more lessons to learn more with you. All teacher are very good but you explain the things more slow and that’s I want. No ofenses, but you are so cute.

Sergio

Dear Teacher,

I am Ramu, it is a good lesson i appreciate you are in Engvid.com. Teacher like me who really don’t know English very well, your lessons will help more and i would like to ask a question. Is it right to say”Which I said earlier” same with “As i was saying earlier”?

I hope for your answer and consideration and you are welcome always teacher.

Thank you teacher.
Ramu.

rampek

Thanks again everyone for your comments and questions.

Rampek, you ask a good question. You can use both “As I was saying” or “As I was saying earlier”. They mean the exact same thing.

“Which I said earlier” is not a conversation expression. It is grammatically incorrect. Thank you again for your question.

    Emma

      Dear Teacher,

Thank you very much for your reply.I will correct my mistake.

      Thank you..

Thanks Emma for helping me..
But, would u mind to write the example of the sentences you mean?? I think that’s more helpfull to me to understand.

dion

    Hi Dion,

Here are is an example of the three expressions used in a conversation.

Bill: “If you ask me, I think 2012 will be even better than 2011”

Mary: “Speaking of 2012, do you have any plans for New Year’s Eve?”

Bill: “I was thinking of watching the fireworks at City Hall.”

There is an interruption. The phone rings, and Bill answers it. He talks on the phone, hangs up the phone and returns to the conversation.

Bill: “As I was saying, I was thinking of watching fireworks at City Hall.”

    Emma

Great, where is the next lesson?

wyattearp

all teachers in this web site are good, and this lesson was great!

Biswajit Behera

excellant teaching

Vasu

can we say ,

As you are are saying ?

Is the statement correct ?

sathyanarayanan

Thanks again everyone for your comments.

Sathyanarayanan, you ask a very good question. In conversation, we never say “As you are saying”.

However, you can say “You were saying?” if someone is interrupted, and you want them to continue their earlier point.

    For example,

Speaker 1: “I love soccer. It is the best sport in the world because…”

    Interruption

    Speaker 2: “You were saying?”

Speaker 1: “As I was saying, soccer is the best sport in the world because you don’t need a lot of equipment, and it’s exciting.

    I hope that helps.

    Emma

Thanks a lot Emma, your Teaching is really gud..

Dear Emma,

I am preparing for IELTS General test. However, selecting appropriate heading for given paragraph is quite bit ambiguous for me.

Therefore, I would highly appreciate if you could help me with your views on how these questions should be tackled.

I will take on my exam on 7-Jan-12 so any suggestion prior to the test may count a lot for me.

fridoon

    Hi Fridoon,

I prefer answering questions on the comment board. I look forward to them. :)

    Emma

what’s the meaning of “eve” in happy new year’s eve?

oswcifre

    Hi oswcifre,

“Eve” means the day before an event or holiday. For example, New Year’s Eve (December 31st) means the day before New Year’s Day (January 1st). Christmas Eve is the day before Christmas.

We say Happy New Year’s Eve on December 31st and Happy New Year on January 1st.

    Emma

Thank you so much for your good explanation

      oswcifre

I think this video is helpful not only due to the great tips in it but also to the whole aspects of the class itself. I mean, the natural development of it. It makes me feel like I’m listening to you in front of me. Thanks a lot.

KHUKZ

In my view the female teachers better than the male ..because they speak very clear and also they have very nice pronunciation..

Ayoubi

thanks for giving me this lesson

ric

ameen u say this word in ur comment many of my friends use this word from usa ….what is the meaning of it …it is slang

rohit

    Great question rohit!

When we talk about slang, we are talking about very informal English. Slang is English that is not acceptable to use everywhere. It should not be used in the workplace or in professional settings. We often use slang with friends.

For example, when I’m talking to my friends and I am surprised by something, I might use the slang expression “what the hell!”.

If I am with my boss, and I am surprised by something I might say something more polite like “that’s surprising.”

You probably have slang in your own language. Just think of things you can say to your friends, but not your teachers or your boss.

    Emma

welcome mam! it’s nice to see you.i liked your learning style….and nice lesson!

If you want to give your opinion, “If you ask me…” is the correct form. “If they ask me…” would be incorrect.

milly

Hey, milly! It’s been a while. You’re not wrong! The man who created this website is a comics reader, and so are James, Alex, and Emma! Actually, “engVid Moderator” is another! So that’s five out of nine engVid people… weird!

Hi Ame How are you ame so happy when you teach us but when you so fast when you speaking

Hamza

hi emma thanx for d lesson but i really couldnt understand the expression “speaking of “….. plz explain it in a simpler way thanx

raina

    Hi Raina,

‘Speaking of’ can be used to refer to something that has just been said.

We use it to start a new topic while linking it back to the current one. It also means incidentally.

    Emma

ok thank u very much emma… n speaking of the problem now i understtod what it actually is …….

IS THIS RIGHT MA’AM ? or pl correct it

      raina

Ok Emma! i can make it more easier for you…

When we talked about in past ( we say ” As i was saying” right.

ok We can make this more easier. We can “As i said earlier Or like i said”

vicky572

    Hi Vicky,

Both the expressions you suggested are good for referring to an earlier point in the conversation.

I think ‘As I was saying’ is better than the others for interruptions though.

    Emma

Ok Emma! i can make it more easier for you…

When we talked about in past ( we say ” As i was saying” right.

ok We can make this more easier. We can say “As i said earlier Or like i said”

vicky572

hello ms emma i just wanna sk you about something i wanna know what”s the difference between until and till

tarek

Great question! Have you seen my video on by and until?

Until and till mean pretty much the same thing. They both mean ‘up to that time’. ‘Till’ is more informal and we usually use it in speaking, not writing.

    Emma

actually i love all Emma’s lessons but if you ask me this lesson is not as good as others. This is just my opinion.I did not understant 2 number and 3 number.but its ok thank yoU Emma :)

iraqiteacher77

Good job! Thanks.

rios

Hi Emma! Thanks for the useful lesson. There is one question I’d like to ask.Is it possible to use these expressions in informal letters?

JUL

    Hi Jul,

These expressions are for conversation. They may sound a little strange in a letter.

    Emma

Hi Emma, If your Boss asked me about you, I would say, you as good as all of your colleagues or better.
Thank you for great teaching.

Hoppel

Thax Emma….

Indar

Emma, I’ve understood the subject, but
I have not understood the expression SPEAKING OF.

Can you explain?

Gabriel

    Hi Gabriel,

In English, the flow of conversation is very important. When we are talking about one subject and then want to talk about a different subject, we use certain expressions in order to keep the conversation flowing smoothly. We don’t want to change the subject abruptly.

‘Speaking of’ is an expression that we use when we are changing from one topic to another related topic. It’s like a signal. It tells our listener we are moving in a different, but related direction in the conversation.

    Look at the following example:

Speaker 1: “Luis Suarez is such a good soccer player.”

Speaker 2: “Speaking of good soccer players, I hear David Beckham is going to be coaching Great Britain’s soccer team at the Olympics.”

By using ‘speaking of’, speaker 2 is giving a signal that the topic of conversation is changing. He does not want to abruptly change the topic of conversation. He wants topic one to flow into topic two. If you take ‘speaking of’ out of the example, the conversation does not flow well.

    Emma

thanx emma now its better explanation really

      raina

There is an old movie called the saint, and in this movie, the character Emma looks a lot like you. That’s coincidence your name is Emma too.

Gabriel

Great session …

Keep it up

Thank you

Sunil

Thank you so much teacher I love this lesson.I want to ask you a question.I can say if they ask me.

Thank you for this way.

Rissa ag Abdoulay

    Hi Rissa,

Thank you for your question. ‘If you ask me,’ means ‘here is my opinion’. It’s another way to say I think.

For example: I think ice cream is delicious.

If you ask me, ice cream is delicious.

These two sentences mean the same thing.

‘If they ask me’ does not mean ‘here is my opinion’.

    Emma

thank you very much my scort is 8out8 I’m very very happe for Engvid cours.

Rissa ag Abdoulay

I wonder if it’s correct when I say something like this.

I like school, blah, blah, blah… Talking about school, tell me…

Can I say “talking about …” instead of “speaking of”?

I have a good idea. When I wrote a letter to a friend from Canada, I wanted to use some of these expressions. Of course, I can forget them. So I decided to write some sentences in notebook. I will be able to find necessary expressions quickly.

Hello ma’m
I’m not a native English speaker, but I have many English speaking friends. So in conversations I always short of quick but formal answers or exclamations in a sad situation. Like; Yesterday a strong tornado struck Oklahoma taking many human lives. I was talking with my friend about this tornado and he’s telling me about the danger and its magnitude and also his close friend and a relative was just a few miles away from this storm, but I didn’t know what to reply for this sentence. I simply said “Oh my God!”. So therefore I need different expressions for these kind of situations.

Thanks

Hello Emma
Please teach how to pronounce fractions and imerial dimensions in urban language. for example:
