Now, I’d like to know if it’s correct to use the verb “turn” to cellphone and “switch” to TV?

Thank you very much :)

Cris Ribeiro

hey rebbeca since i start using this site i have learned alot specially some expressions which were difficult for me at some time now they are much easier.i just want to do a request that could u please teach me about the expression “suppose” and its various uses.

      aaryyan

What a lovely and interesting class Rebecca! As a non-native speaker of English and until I watched your video lesson I hadn’t been aware of the fact that of all polite requests, ‘would you mind + verb +ing…’ is the only one to which we actually say no as an answer.Thnak you so muc. Keep up the good work!

jasonbrazil

Hi Rebecca, thanks a lot for sharing this topic. It’s such benefit for me. O yea, would you mind giving me the definition of polite request? Or maybe you can suggest me any book containing it? Much thanks and love.

ahmed95

There is one more — “could you maybe” :)

morfik

What is the difference between: “would you mind” and “do you mind”?

morfik

Do you mind ?– less formal
would you mind ? –more formal
this is the list for request started from less formal till more formal
    1- can I borrow your pen ?
    2- could I borrow your pen ?
3- Is it ok if I borrow your pen ?
4- Do you mind if I borrow your pen ?
5- would it be ok if I borrowed your pen ?
6- would you mind if I borrowed you pen ?
7- would you mind borrowing me your pen ?
8- I wonder if I could borrow your pen ?
9 -I was wondering if you`d mind mind borrowing me your pen ?
so as you can see the last one is the most formal >> glad to help

    hisham77

Ok, so basically they both mean the same.

There is one thing. You wrote: “would you mind borrowing me your pen?”. But I found construction with “me” after “mind”: “would you mind me closing the door”.

Are both good, or just only one of them?

      morfik

well,,, actually we`ve clear rule .
after would you mind + V(ing)
e.g. Do you mind telling me what you`re doing in her ?
try to change this,, you will noticed an imbalance in the structure of the sentence . xD ^^

        hisham77

First things first. “Her” doesn’t mean “here”. When I read “Do you mind telling me what you`re doing in her?”, I thought: what? “in her”, physically? Does it mean sex or something?” xD

I’m not sure if you wanted to write: “Do you mind telling me what you’re doing here?”, but “me” in this case isn’t the same “me” what I’m talking about.

          Look at these two examples.

“Do you mind closing the door?”
“Do you mind me closing the door?”

The first one means that you are asking someone to close the door. The second one means that you want to close the door.

          morfik

In the outset,, my sincerest apology for the word ^^here^^ it is a mistake ,aye aye I meant this word here not her becuz the are utterly different. I was typing fast and I didn`t noticed .
I want to quote this ^^ physically mean sex or something ^^ come fella are kinda deviant fella .
ohhhhhh please Mr. knock it off .
secondly ,, I make some digging about _ me _
          and I found this
aye aye,, you can used it when want emphasize some thing related to yourself
as you said ; Do you mind me closing the door?

          the reply
yes, I do mind you .
No, not at it all .

so there will strong emphasizing in the answering of this question , for more info check the ^interchange book^ .

          hisham77

Hi morfik ! Where are you ? How’s everything with you?! I don’t see you and your comments . You are one of the best and active members in this site . Why aren’t here more ? Best regards.

    Soei

Diana

what is transformation-generative grammer?

Mahdi

    Wowooo,a professional query!!!
    U know…it’s related 2 Linguistics.
In linguistics, a transformational –generative grammar(TGG)is a generative grammar, specially of a natural language, that has been developed in the Chomskyan tradition of phrase structure grammars.

Dear Rebecca:

Thanks for teaching us English, I know you’re really interested to teach us grammar, and I want to ask you why to use words ending -ing, ie: “Choosing a college can be difficult” or “A few universities have started offering special computer programs…” instead of “Choose a college…” or “…have started to offer special computer programs…” In spanish infinitive’s normal in this kind of sentences.

Thaks a lot
Regards from Mexico, Laura

Dear Rebecca,
Good Evening.
Hope all is well with you.

Every good teaching for all of us. Thank you.

I wounder if you can help me in my difficult situation now.

I will explain the full story.

I am looking for an job change, in that process i got an offer from a company i started negotiation for the package offered and finally agreed after successful negotiation and got amended offer from the company. I requested for the signed in original offer letter for confirmation with new employer. so that i can go ahead for my resignation with present employer.

So I requested through return email to the new employer accepting the offer and looking to collect the original offer letter for further process. I did not get any reply from the new employer, i awaited for two days, no response from them. then i called the concern person and asked about it and he told why you need the original are you sure, i said yes i need and will wait to resign till i receive the letter.
he agreed and said to wait, they are busy so will take time to get back to you. i waited for 3 days.

after 3 day, i sent a polite request email again to know the status. no response from the employer. then next day sent again an request email, no response from new employer.

Mean time in my present job,i was pushed to take a new project assignment from my present employer, but i was in process of getting this offer letter and leaving the present employer , so i was not able to say no without original letter in hand. so that was my situation.

So, after my two consecutive email follow-up to the new employer for original offer letter collection. there was no response. i called them up next day and asked for it being i explained the status. but he told that he sent a email reply to me , and he got annoyed by receiving my call and he again explained me what he sent in the email. and told not to take any decision till they get back to me. i said yes and thanked again kept the phone. but when i checked again the email, there was no reply email from them. and finally i received a email next day early morning 2.30 am the email as he explained me by phone.

Email said : ” i received ur emails and call and we will sure get back to you to know when to collect the letter soon. till that ime do do anything with your present employer.

But, the main mistake is here, the email sent by the client on 10.13 am on 21st jan, but mistake some were, i received only on 23rd jan 2.20am. so i called on 22nd as explained in previous two paragraph.

Rebacca, I hope i am going such long explanation. but i have to.

After all the above i waited for them to come back and waited …..

mean time in my present company i have to say yes or no to take the assignment. (if , i have to continue with them i have to say yes, if i get this offer confirmed i can say no.)
We had final meeting on Tuesday.

I was waiting for the new offer confirmation before that meeting.

Finally, Tuesday morning 7.13am i received an email from new employer saying to call tomorrow and get the offer letter.

I was happy seeing the email, but the meeting was at 8.30am same day. somehow i did not say no or yes for new assignment, managed. and did not tell about new offer.

meeting over.

Next day, i have to call the new employer to meet and collect offer letter.
I just called him at 7.35 am to know the time of meeting to plan for my day in priority.

The person got really angry and said is this the time you call, do you also call clients too at this time for appointment. I said no i will not call clients at this time. also i told i called you because,i just saw your emails which sent to me at 7.13am so i thought you will be available. I also said sorry for any disturbed by calling you now. he told ok, now you don’t call me again, and said he will get back to me at his own convenient.

But till now, no call or email from him. so my offer is not confirm yet.( but thank god i did not take any decision to tell my present employer, so i am in Job).

MY QUESTION TO YOU IS, HOW DO I DO POLITE FOLLOW-UP AND EXPLAIN ABOUT THE EMAIL DELAY AND PHONE CALL MISTAKE.

PLEASE SEE IF YOU CAN HELP ME IN THIS TO GET THIS OFFER.

Hoping to hear from you

Reagrds
Sree

Sree

It’s unfortunate that this happened to you and I’m not sure the situation can change because the person was very angry that you called so early. You can try to write a very polite letter of apology and asking that he please give you another chance. You could say something like this,

Please accept my sincere apologies for calling so early. It was not my intention to disturb you in any way. I hope you will give me an opportunity to show you that I really care and can be an asset to your organization.

Also, if this person is so difficult, you might want to reconsider whether you really want to work there. Sounds like he would be a rather unforgiving boss. Often, things happen for the best. I am sure you will get a better job offer and hopefully, a kinder and more understanding boss. My best wishes to you, Sree.

    Rebecca

Would you please describe how to use “I wish to”, because it’s sometimes confusing me.
Thank you very much.

zain

“I wish to” is a more formal way of saying “I want to”.

    All the best, Zain.

    Rebecca

10 out of 10, I succeed ^^

It’s exactly what I wanted.
I could understand which one is informal or formal.
Maybe from the next time, I am supposed to choose ‘could you please’ from these options.
As you said, ‘could you please’ is practical and useful.
I can use this phrase on any occasions.
There is no reason not to use this.
I hope your lesson continues to upload eternally.
