Neither & nor
, either & or
, both & and
, not only & but
. These are correlative conjunctions
. You’ve probably learned to memorize these pairs, but I’m going to teach you to UNDERSTAND when and how to use them. Instead of focusing heavily on grammar rules, join me and we’ll talk about the situations where these correlative conjunctions are used in English. You’ll learn how these pairs can be used to express choice, surprise, inclusion, or negation. It may sound difficult, but trust me, you’ll understand it in no time.

A revision of conjunctions very useful, I have remembered my first doubts with this types of grammatical structures, overall with the two positions and pronunciations of “Either…or” (choice) or “not..either” (negative). A great video class and very useful to follow studying English. Thanks a lot, teacher James, you rock.

Hi! Sorry, I have a question, probably a stupid one, but this sentence doesn’t sound me correct:
“Not only was it of great quality but it was also cheap”, why is it not “not only it WAS of great..”? I mean why the subject is after the verb?
It’s the correct sentence. It’s the inversion. This construction is used to emphasize something.
To build such kind of sentence you reverse the subject and the verb; add the the auxiliary verb for tenses.

The question to admin: why does the video with Gill about queen family disappear? I watched it only once and want to repeat! There wasn’t either rude or disrespectful information in it? Is it due to some kind of censorship?
Queen’s family, sorry
Either learning English or French is one of the first steps for migrating to Canada.
One question. James, why sentence wich starts with Not only has different order of words… did it smell etc. Why the did comes first?

Hello James. On this lesson I got a doubt. For example in this case “not only did he finish, but he also got the highest score in the class”. Instead did he finish, could I say: not only he finished, but also… There is another case: “not only do they live on the same street, but they also work in the same office” why put “do” before they. Would be wrong if I say: not only they live on the same street, but they also work in the same office?
Yeah, I’m joining to the question. Why need to use so complicated contruction?
Thank you so much i got 9/9 yayyyy

thanks a lot for these lessons james, i got 9/9 , thanks for being so useful to me.
The way that James teach is very interesting and makes me easier to understand the lesson. Thank you very much James :D
PS : I like Mr. E. LOL
“Either A or B” is a frustrating expression to me, because apparently it doesn’t have a logical equivalent: depending on the context, it could be an “inclusive or” (A, B or both) or a “selection/exclusive or” (A or B, but not both). Natural language is not as precise as logic, I guess =*
oooh amazing teacher so happy for being member here
NICE TEACHING
Thanks for the lesson, James! I’m so glad that i can improve my english grammar with your help. You are doing a great job!
i got 9 corect..yeahhhh

Thanks a lot! Love your lessons! Everything is clear and easy to understand.
But have 1 question:I have a sentence in a book (Neither Jack nor Brian is strong) I think it’s a mistake (is) it should be (are) or it is possible to use singular as well?
Thanks!
Nope! We use singular verb with either or neither
so, “Neither Jack nor Brian is strong” is correct one.
but if both nouns are plural then we use plural verb with that sentence.
Not only your lectures inspired me but it also helps me learn English.
Both you and engvid’s team are teaching English very well.
is it correct?
Not only did it smell, but it also tasted funny.
Is it mandatory to use the auxiliary verb in the first clause (did it smell)? Could it be: “Not only it smelt, but also tasted funny”?
9 for 9 ,great!

Great class!!!
10/10…thanks a lot
Thanks James 100 %
thanks a lot, your explanations not only are brilliant but also are helping me improve my English skills.
Hi James, I appreciate the wonderful class you have here and the example sentences are very nice. ;)
One quick question though, in the no. 3 example you gave in the latter half of the video–
“Neither the woman nor the man were happy with the answer.”
According to one of the grammar book I have (perhaps it’s not so correct?), the verb should be aligned with the subject that is closer to it, and hence in this case the verb should be “was” (to be aligned with “the man”), instead of “were”.
So I’m confused here. It would be great if you could kindly clarify this particular grammatical rule for me. Thanks a lot for your help.
I love quiz.
I’ve loved your lesson! You’re both a great communicator and an amazing teacher. Thank you!!!
Thanks

Thanx James, I want to say hello to you and the rest of a students, I am new here, your lessons are great, usefull and you are really funny, I laugh every time I watch your lessons :)).
It is bothering me something in this lesson. I am confused about the tence in sentences when we talk about negation (not only-but also). Example: “Not only was it of great quality, but it was also cheep”
In first part of a sentence we have a question form (not only WAS IT of..), don’t we need to say “Not only IT WAS of great quality, but it was also cheep” ?
other students can also help, thank you
THANK YOU FOR THIS CLASS
