Thank you..
when you were talking about simple present , that was hilarious
Thanks very much, Emma
Hi Emma…thanks for the video…i just have a doubt. Just now and At the moment. Both means something that happens now and i should use simple present?
Hi Almeyda
Just now and At the moment don’t mean same.
just now means ‘a moment ago’ near present.
Hi!
I got a little confused too. But check this out
http://oald8.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/dictionary/just+now#just_1__134
It might mean both.
Hi there,
The meaning of “at the moment” is so clear but “just now” has got different meanings:
1.At this moment.
e.g. : I’m busy just now.
2.During this present period.
e.g. : Business is good just now.
3.Only a short time ago.
e.g. : I saw her just now.
…so,the same meaning 4 both is possible, depends on the situation they r used!!!
Glad I could help,
:) fatiima!
If I understood, the simple past should be used when the action took an exact moment in the past. So “Just now” refers to an exact moment in the past (e.g. one minute ago), “At the moment”, instead, refers to an action that continues and its representation on the time line isn’t a point in the past, but it is a segment. Emma, please, correct me, if I’m wrong.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH EMMA
Good lesson Emma!
I saw this lesson five minutes ago.
Very useful, thank you.
Just what i wanted.I have to practice though since i am not consistent yet.8 out of 9.Thanks Emma for the simple but sophisticated topic
Thank you, I’m happy because you teach very good
Thanks, Emma. You’re an angel
I don’t understand. James in his video here
https://www.engvid.com/grammar-past-simple-present-perfect/
said that if there is a specific time, it is present perfect!
And you tell that all these time markers are for the past simple.
Ok, but why I have never read that someone tell “I have forgotten something”, while it cannot be with a specific time, it is related with now (like “I have lost my key”in Murphy book of grammar)?? Why all people tell “I forgot something”?
I’m not teacher, but my opinion is that James didn’t say that “present perfect” is used to specific time. By opposite, he said that present perfect is used in a nonspecific time. And Emma said that “past simple” must be applied when we are talking about specific time in the past. So, for example:
“She said about simple past.”. This means that she said something in a specific time in the past. Maybe yesterday: “yesterday, she said about simple past.”.
Now…
“She HAVE said about simple past.”. In this case, it means that she HAVE asked about something in the a nonspecific time in the past… Maybe, till more the one time in the past. Maybe, she can have said it yesterday, and, maybe, she can have said again last week, and, maybe, she will say it again. In this case, we must use “present perfect” because we don’t know when the action happened or how frequently the action have happened in the past.
thank you for explanation. It is true that James said about Past Simple has a Specific time, I’ve committed a mistake.
But this logic doesn’t work with the sentence “I have forgotten something”. The problem that American don’t tell it and tell instead “I forgot something” while it is wrong. So I am asking why? Because seems they don’t think it is mistake.
But thank you for a help anyway.
Summarize:
When we know when the action happened, we need to use “simples past”.
Examples:
I wrote this same message three times last week.
I went to New York in September.
She loved that city.
When we don’t know when or how long time the action is happened, we MUST use “perfect present”.
Examples:
I have answered some questions in that site.
He have visited my mom every day.
We have run on weekends.
ok, let’s take “I forgot to take my keys”. In this case it is incorrect because without specific time I have to use Present Perfect and to tell “I have forgotten my keys”.
The question is why nobody from native speakers in real life tell like that? I have never heard word “forgotten” in my life in fact.
I’ve forgotten all english words that I learn. (nonspecific time).
I forgot my homework. (specific time)
I forgot what you ask, sorry. (specific time)
You forgot to take your keys. (specific time. Yes, it is because you forgot to take it when, where? It’s specific, even though you didn’t have said.)
You have forgotten your key every single day. (nonspecific)
But, as I said, I’m not teacher, so I can have forgotten something.
Correct:
I forgot what you asked, sorry. (I forgot to use simple past…).
Add: “I’ve forgotten everything” Phil Collins.
Correct: “….You have not said.”
Just a note about your use of simple present.
She has instead of she have.
Thanks Emma, very useful.
I wanted to say that you have to say SHE HAS!
Bye.
I hadn’t understood this lesson completely before I’ve seen this class.
Correct:
I hadn’t understood this lesson completely before seeing this class.
sorry, I have mistaken, I mean James said that if there is a Specific time, it is past Simple.
And is it correct to “see” and not to “watch” a movie? My teacher said never to tell “see” when it is related with watching something.
thank you Emma
Emma could you make more video about TOEFL part grammar please
100!
7 from 9
I’ve had a mistake. “Just now” is a confused word for me,and I put present perfect in my answer. Thanks a lot for your lesson, Emma !
what about present perfect ? please clear present perfect it’s more complicated than simple past
thanks emma, i am your avid student on line.. 8-9 good for me because just now, i learned all this…
teacher please give us some classes on phrasal verbs too!!! thank you teacher EMMA.
I was confused or forgot “just now” and “before.” I have to review this lesson later. Thank you for your lesson.
See you, Emma ;)
Per my understanding, time markers have to be a specific time, from just now to many years ago. But, you wouldn’t know the exact time while with the word “before”. Hope this helps.
I see…this time I could answer correctly the quiz with “before” because of your help. Thank you, centaliu :)
thanks emma
thank u…
Just now, I finished this class.
I got 8/9.
me too
Many thanks
Thanks for your lecture, Emma! But I have a question about one of the clue word you have mentioned, which is “when”. Should I use past time whenever I come across this word? I mean I have seen some people use “when” with simple present or simple future tense.

9 out of 9,, thanks for the pointers..
if i say 1.you look great and 2.

Is it necessary to add a comma (,) after those words as you did on the quizzes on video?
(Yesterday, just now, last week, at the moment, four years ago, etc.)
9/9 :D
Thank you for very nice website!!!
this is nice way to tech English. thanks emma
Thank you soooooo much Teacher Emma. You’re a wonderful teacher
Thank you very much Emma! Now I have no doubt about that! :)
good evening dorycam, your sentence “Now, I have no doubt about that”. it would have sounded better if you had put a comma after the NOW, also you should have specified the subject what your talking about here. Now, I have no doubt in my mind anymore about the past simple tense Emma. would have being more appropriate.
Take care best wishes for the future.
Thanks for the advice, I’ll keep it in mind! Good luck! :)

So far,I’m still confusing about time marker like just now we should use present simple instead of simple past and before we use simple past.would you please explain more details.
Just now,i did not understAnd the lesson.
Just now means ‘a moment ago’ and It refers to past.
Ok, but why I have never read that someone tell “I have forgotten something”, while it cannot be with a specific time, it is related with now (like “I have lost my key”in Murphy book of grammar)?? Why all people tell “I forgot something”?
Thank you very much, for the way you are explained the lesson, it was very anderstanble and simple. I don’t know if there is a way to explain all the tense like the way you are giving the clue words in this lesson. because this my problem using the tenses.

Thank you Emma…. a good and useful lesson.
When I watch these videos, I feel like I was in a real classroom and not in a virtual one… Emma really was born to teach! Thank you so much!
Hi Janiza, I am not an English teacher like Emma. But, I think “I FELT like I was in a real classroom” is the correct way to say. correct me if I am wrong.
Thank you.
Roshank, I think I should say: When I watch EngVid’s videos I feel like I’m in a real classroom…” FEEL here must be in the present tense, because I’m talking about an everyday action… I think I’ve made a mistake with the tense of verb TO BE. Anyway, thanks for your interest on helping me, okay? I really appreciate that! Bye, bye… :)
Thanks for the appreciation,
Hi Emma!

Hello Emma, How do you do? I have two questions: I don’t understand why we can’t use the simple past with “before”. before means that something doesn’t continue in the present, doesn’t it? 2/ “At” is not in your list of markers but is this sentence correct?: “I finished cooking at seven o’clock” (I find it in an other quiz). thank you very much for yours explainations

What differences are between conjugating the verb “to have” and conjugating the verb “to be rich” in the passive voice? I have great difficulty in that, conjugating the verb “to have” at present it is in the current language, a meaning synonymous with the verb conjugation of “to be rich”

Hi!Thanks, Emma for your teach
Dear Professor Emma,
I have just watched the lesson on simple past time markers again. Your teaching on time markers is somewhat different in respect of “just now” what I used to learn.
As far as I remember from my first English textbook I had the following example:
Tom is washing his hands. He has just washed his hands. They are clean now.
or interchangeably –
Tom is washing his hands. He has washed his hands just now. They are clean now.
It was a basic example for the usage of present perfect. Later on I was taught to use sometimes ’just’ and ’just now’ with simple past somewhat as in your lesson. But I have never become a champion or at least a good worker who is good at using ‘ just’, and’ just now’ in sentences.
Could you provide an explanation here in comment section when to use just now with PP and when with SP? Or could you make a separate video if it is a real grammatical difficulty.
I would also appreciate if you continue to make the lessons with usage of gerund and infinitive form after verb from Alex’s resources. I have in mind those verbs which change the meaning acoding to ing verb or infinitive verb construction.
Kind regards,
mkjmkj
I love the way you are teaching. Thanks a lot

Hi Emma,
I’ve got a question about the simple past.
When we make a question we are supposed to use the auxiliary verb + the subject + the main verb on its base or original form. E.g: Did you see that movie?
However, when we make a question which involves question words (what, who, etc) we use the verb in the past form. E.g: What happened? Who called?
If it is possible, I want know the explanation for this grammatical construction.
Thank you very much.
Best wishes,
Fernando
