a taxi” or “in
a taxi”? Do you like to travel “in
a plane” or “by
plane”? After watching this simple but useful lesson, you will know exactly which preposition to use in any situation.

Got it. I’m going home by car because here it’s raining cats and dogs, it’s a typical May morning in Northern Italy. See you next time, thank you James.
Is it a general expression, or do cats and dogs fall from the sky actually?)) And yes, it’s raining now all over the south Europe, my place (south of Russia) including
Yes, it’s a common expression but I don’t know its origin. It simply means that it’s raining heavily. Anyway, on EngVid there are several lessons about weather expressions and I’m going to cope with this topic, given that this rain seems endless…
I see now, thanks. Yes, it is going to be raining the next week. By the way, it seems you get up really early – i have to wake at 8 a.m. by local time:)
It dates back to a time where houses had no ceilings and logs were used withhold the roof and the house walls;some animals like cats would climb onto the logs to sleep;however when it rained the logs would be wet and slippery, so these animals would fall. Hope I’ve helped you have a better understanding of the ” It’s raining cats and dogs!”. ;)
This explanation seems kind of strange. Is that supposed to be a joke or you really mean it ?
” It’s raining cats and dogs! (old-fashioned)
something that you say when it is raining very heavily It’s raining cats and dogs out there! It’s a wonder any of the men can see what they’re doing!” Cambridge Idioms Dictionary, 2nd ed. Copyright © Cambridge University Press 2006. Reproduced with permission.
Yes, it’s clear enough now)) Though I saw somewhere, this phrase came from some 18th sentury english fairy tale book..
Hi, there! You was interested about expression raining cats and dogs? Tadam) https://deepenglish.com/2016/04/its-raining-cats-and-dogs/
By the way, it’s, also, very good guys for learning English. So, try that one as well. Have a nice day)
Hi Canardo, you did mistake. your sentence should be i’m going to home by car
“You got 10 correct out of 10.
:D” – thank’s James!
I was always confused by those prepositions, and now I get it. Thanks, James.
How amazing! Thanks for explanation, clear, simple and precised. 10 out of 10.
What’s the difference between “2. We came here by car” and “7. We went to the airport in a taxi”? Could I say “by a taxi”?
You could say “by taxi” if you take out the preposition A. So it would be:
We went to the airport by taxi.
Otherwise, you must say IN a taxi.
its my same opinion , same fault as they said (
same as me.
thank you, Wellem. because of you, I figure out the question seven.
Thank you! I had the same doubt
Thank you James for your clear explanations.
Thank you James for this useful lesson. God bless you!
Thanks James …I understand prepositions!
Mr. James If I owned a glider Can I say in my glider or in my plane
*if I own(if you still have it). And You can use IN GLIDER.
glider like small boat as you say :)
Hello James, it was a nice lesson, that table made my confusion clear. Now I am expert at Prepositions. Thank you
super! and easy!THANK you very much!
7 correct out of 10))
hi James, thank you for the lesson. it’s helpful.
Thank u :)
Thank you Mr james it is very intresting lesson ..you are very smile….
thank you again
Thank you Mr james it is very intresting lesson ..you are very smile…
Thank you James so much! But what about: motorbike, snowmobile, coach, cart, canoe, scooter, rickshaw, aerostat, cable car, golf cart, skateboard ON or IN? Thank you in advance for your answer!
For a Motorbike and Scooter is probably ‘on’, because you have to sit on the motorbike. You should use ‘ON’ for cable car, because it is a public transportation (Large vehicle).
Very nice!
Thanks a lot James!!What a really useful lesson for all Spanish speakers like me, who always make these kind of mistakes with prepositions!!!
I thank you Mr James
Hi James, thanks for your lesson! I didn’t understand why my answer was wrong when I chose – “We went to the airport – by – a taxi”. I thought it meant – how – did we got to the airport.
it’s a little bit tricky, but when we say how it’s always by taxi/car/train/plane without article A; and when we go to somewhere in a taxi/a car
Now I understood, thanks)))
I don’t understand question 6, why I have to use in? Please, somebody explain it to me!
And question 7, how can I know, this sentence means we are in the taxi now and we’re going to the airport or we went to the airport by this taxi?
Oh! I also have a problem with those two questions
(6 and 7). Please, somebody help us!
“To come in” means to enter a room or a building. When someone returns from work or whatever, he/she gets in ( arrives at home),enters a particular building. As for the seventh question, you should pay attention to the article. To be transported by taxi but to go in a taxi.
Oh, thanks!
Thank you James
Thank you, James for a great lesson and a very useful table! But why are holidays not included in the table (at, time)? Do they subordinate to different rules?
Thank you James
tomorrow we have meeting AT 5pm, i am ON the way, we will meet ON monday. i am going to school BY bus, james going to attain party in a taxi
James, thank you very much for your lesson. I’d like to ask what’s the difference between “2. We came here by car” and “7. We went to the airport in a taxi”? Could I say “by a taxi”?
Thank you))
Thank you so much
I don’t understand the preposition “by “when we speak about time.
You can watch the other lesson about By time and in time.
https://www.engvid.com/prepositions-of-time-in-english/
Question 7, Could you please explain to me why the answer is “in” and not “by”. Thanks in advance
Thank you very much for this very useful video lesson, James. It is very important to practice the correct usage of these prepositions. Greetings from Brazil.
Hello! The answer is “in” because of the indefinite article “a”:
* We went to the airport in “a” taxi.
* We went to the airport by taxi.
Hi Julio Cesar thank you so much. Regards
You’re welcome! Bye!
Very helpful. I have got the method how to use the word “at”,”on”,”in” & “by”. Thanks.

I enjoyed the lesson. Thank you.
Thanks James, I like this lesson . It’s very important for me.
Isn’t the 7th question wrong? it’s supposed to be By a taxi, not In a taxi…
Hey Jody. If there wasn’t the preposition “A”, it would need to be ” by taxi”.
For example:
He went to the airport by taxi.
He went to the airport in a
In a taxi *
Do you see the difference now?
I hope you got it.
Thank you :-)
Fantastic lesson as ever! Thank you James!

I think it means that the store must be clean in a very short time.
Hi James Thanks for the lesson. At Question 7, would it be also possible to use ‘by’ as well as ‘in’? I got it wrong because I chose ‘by’ instead ‘in’.
Please give me your answer. Thanks.
To say ‘by car” you would need to take out the preposition “A”.
By taxi / in a taxi
By car / in a car
i do’t understend

Hello James, Could you explain me why you use “in” and not “by”in the sentence “we went to the airport in a taxi”. I think it’s due to the article “a” before taxi. I suppose I can’t say by a taxi but by taxi.
Thank you for this amazing lesson. In spite of my seventy three years old, thanks to you I improve my english. Have a good week-end.
I am so happy,I got 10 correct out of 10.And thank you so much James, your explanation is so clear!
HiJames
You speak too fast, please speake abit slowly, thanks
90/100 I got 7th question incorrect and I am still confused with it. SPOILER ALERT! I am still wondering why the preposition is incorrect in “We went to airport BY the taxi” as it answers the question “HOW?” like
Okay I got it, it’s because of the article “a” before “taxi”. Kudos!
Why there is’nt any video for whatching????i can’t find any things.. ??
I get70….
You mean you got 70.Right:)?
HiJames
You speak too fast, please speak a bit slowly.

Thanks for this lesson :)
I liked your lesson. All the teachers here are amaizing but only on your lessons I see ‘real teacher’s tricks’: the board is readay, using a funny character that participates in the lesson too and a final overview. That’s important) Good day!
I’ve made 10/10 :) but I have questions for this lesson. I’ll use 2nd task for example. If I’m saying: we came here by car. Can I say also: we came here by bus or should I say: we came here on the bus? Because in this situation we are talking about how i get there, not about how I’m getting there right now.
Please help me to understand the difference :)
Excellent ressource. Thank you!
Thank you
Mashkoor James!

Thanks.
Thanks
Thank you again, James! You have given us very helpful tips as usual. Another tip to understand the difference between “in” and “at” is according to the time you spend somewhere. For instance, if you are “in” a hospital, you are probably sick and will stay there for a long time. On the other hand, if you are “at” the hospital, you might be visitting someone and will leave the place soon.
Hi James. Thank you for making videos interesting! Can you please prepare a video about ‘since’ vs ‘because’? Recently I noticed that I don’t use the word because anymore, since there is no need for that. See, again :) I need your help.

(when it comes about locations) Thank you James for your proper explanation, I used to say “Meet me in my house” or “lets get together in the mall” now I know that when we are talking about locations the correct preposition is “at”.
Thanks!
Thank you, teacher! I liked to listen to you about transportation, time and location using prepositions. See you, then.

Question 7 is a little confusing.
The got to the airport using a taxi , so they went to the airport BY taxi.
Why ” in taxi” ?
thank you for this lesson but i have a question please; why you said in an area and not on an area? thank you
I liked the lesson
Hi mr.James ? I get it now . I often confused to use this
10 out of 10!!!
In Q7, why do we use (in a taxi) instead of (by a taxi)? Because I think that the sentence was talking about the way of traveling!
I really like the way that you used to teach English. You are great… and funy too. Sorry if I have any mistake.
Thanks, James, I got it!
I am a little confused by this quiz : we went to the airport in a taxi. Why not using by?
I know it’s in the taxi, but it’s talking about the way you get to the airport ,right ? So the answer is not supposed to be “by” ????
Thank you James, Very easy to understand!
Thank you Jmaes, your lessons are really understandable!!
Thank you Mr. James. Your lessons are helping me to clear my misunderstanding about English grammar. I want to learn more from you.

Regarding digital information: is it stored ON or IN a computer,a server, a disk etc.?? How about a link: is it ON or IN a website ???

That’s a good question and probably deserves its own lesson!
Data, web pages, etc., are on a computer/server/disk, but in “the cloud”. A link is on a website.

Great lesson.I hope you can teach us more prepositions
as well as phrasal verbs.
Sorry, I couldn’t understand why I’m supposed to use “In” in the phrase “Mr. E came in from work and … “. What is that mean?
Is means that Mr.E came IN the room, or IN the kitchen, or IN the hall. In general it means, that Mr.E came INside.
you make it easy but it need a lot of practice to remember it easily
thanks mr james very useful.
for weekend which one we can use?
Thank you, Mr. James! Cool demonstration.

What about a situation when a car belongs to somebody, like a husband, a friend, my mum, ect. but that person wants to take us somewhere with him/her. Do we still say ‘I’m in my husband’s/mum’ car. We are going to the store right now’ ?
Got7/10.

Hi James…. I love your lessons.
But I’m in a shoppingcenter or at a shoppingcenter? ?
Very informative, enjoyed your lecture.
one thing to add on here, she goes to school on/by foot?
here we use “on” she goes to school on foot.
I love you James . I could understand this topic for the first time . Thank you thank you very oh sorry don’t use usually “very” the lesson was superb ;)
Hi James.
I like the way you teach us. It is super.
On question 9, I got it wrong. I choose by instead of at, because I did not recognize preposition “the” before library. So if it was just library then “by” is correct. Is my analysis correct? at the library, by library.
It was a superb lesson. Thanks for teaching!
We went to the airport ___ a taxi.

Hi James. The lesson was great, also you teach really good. million tnx
Hello. I appreciate your time creating this video! Can you explain why we say on campus, on the beach, on the playground, on the field, on the island…..? These are three-dimensional spaces, not flat surfaces, but yet we still use the word “on.” Also, it does not seem to be an explanation of walls/buildings vs. open spaces. For example, why do we say “in the park” and “in the woods” but “on the field” and “on the beach”? They are all three-dimensional, open spaces.
how did they get into the airport? by taxi right?
10/10….thanks a ton, james!

9/10 You explained it superbly. xD i just dont know why it is ‘in’ at this sentence “we went to airport ___ a taxi”
N° 7.
“We went to the airport ___ a taxi.”
Why the answer is “in”? If you are asking: “how did you go to the airport?”
I got 9 out of 10! Question 6 is my mistake. Thank you James!
Thanks for your explanation, it was quite useful
