Heteronyms
are words that are spelled the same way but have different pronunciations and meanings. Since they look the same, it is particularly tricky to know how to pronounce them because you need to be aware of their context. For example, the heteronym close
has two different meanings and pronunciations in the following sentences: “We live close” and “Close the door.” In this English lesson, I will teach you many other heteronyms you need to know, like bass
, present
, refuse
, wind
, bow
, and more. There are no particular rules to determine their pronunciation, and they vary in function, some being verbs, nouns, and adjectives. So watch this lesson to learn some useful English heteronyms, and do the quiz to test your memory.

8/10 Well, it is very good to have a B1 plus English level (according to TOEIC exam)
I say homographs instead of heteronyms, but both are the same.

Hi bamfg,
arid = very dry
Arid land or an arid climate is very dry because it has very little rain.
Amazing and the best :*
I’m sorry but why the answer to sentence 10 is ‘nose’.
Hi Nguyenhau,
because the pronunciation of the word NOSE is [nəʊz]
The pronunciation of the word BOW is [bəʊ] and BOWS is [bəʊz].
================
browse /braʊz/
how /haʊ/
vow /vaʊ/

There are also two other common “bow”s. The first, pronounce the same as the verb (“baw”) means the frot part of a ship or boat (opposite of “prow”). The second, pronounced like the decoration (“bo”), is a weapon used by archers (bow and arrow). English is indeed both amazing and confusing :)
I got 5/10.I’m sorry.I will try again.
