Hi Alex! Thank you for this lesson. I made 2 mistakes in the first and the third question. But I think that in the first question I am right. I would ask you to explain what is wrong. In the first question I answered “well” because “it tastes well”, not “this burger is good”.
…actually I described the verb “taste” with the adverb “well”. Isn’t it&? Grammatically, it should be right
There is a small group of verbs of “sensation” that use the adjective instead of the adverb.
It seems good, it looks fine, it smelled wonderful …
It tastes good!!!!!
“To taste” functions here as a copulative verb; “good” is the adjectival subject complement.
Yeah just take it as it is
Thanks for the clarification. But in the lesson was nothing about it. I intuitively imagined another answer :) but in the test decided to rely on the rules from the lesson. Now I know it. Thank you again!
I can’t understand it.The first question I am wrong. But why the copulative verb can use good?
than u bro, so what about I saw a movie yesterday. It was pretty _______________.
the answer was good. this is not a sensation verb and also i think describes the verb so why the answer is good?
A linking verb connects the subject of the sentence to information about the subject, such as adjective, noun, or subject complement. Whereas an action verb expresses an action and is usually followed by adverb.
“taste” can be both a linking verb in some sentences and an action verb in others. One way to determine is to substitute “is” for it. If the sentence still makes sense, then “taste” is probably a linking verb; otherwise it’s an action verb.
Ex: This burger tastes good = This burger is good.
Ex: The wine tastes like vinegar = The wine is like vinegar.
*** Make sense, so “taste” is a linking verb. Hence, the adjective “good” is the right answer.
Ex: I can’t taste anything well because of my cold.
The sentence doens’t make sense when substituting “taste” with “be”: I can’t be anything well because of my cold.
*** Hence, “taste” is an action verb and must be followed by the adverb “well”.
I also answered well in the first question because is the verb what is being modified. What’s up with that, what we understood wrong?
I also answered “well” in the first question because the verb is what is being modified. This means that an adverb is required, right? What’s up with that? — (Please remove the previous comment. Thanks.))
i think tastz is a state verb
I made one mistake, the number one..could the teacher explain it? Thanks a lot.

good describes noun

Thank you Alex.
thank you
Thank you so much for this lesson Alex.
By the way very often I do not know if I must say “good” or “right”. As an example, what is the correct sentence:
-I’m on the right way
or
-I’m on the good way
Kind regards
Jean-Paul
“I’m on the right away” means that you are going straight where you should go or the right side of something. “I’m on the good way” means you are doing something well.
Alex, in the quit there was a question:
1. This burger tastes _______________.
good
well
I answered WELL because it modifies the verb (it tastes <= to taste), so it is adverb. But the quiz says it must be GOOD. Why?
HI Alex ,
thank u for your lesson :)
I dont undrestand one thing in this quiz
1. This burger tastes _______________.
good
well
why good not well ?
after the verb i thought it shoud be “well” . I’m confused. Please, help me to undrestand.
greetings
Angelica
I think that we may use “well” in that case if there is action in the sentence. So “tastes” it is not action.

Hi Alex
What a great site and what an impressive teacher you are! I taught ESL 16 years ago for a period of three years and recently decided to go back to it so your lessons are really are helpful, it’s all coming back to me through you:) I have a couple of questions for you regarding teacher/student workbooks. I believe I used to use Oxford/Cambridge workbooks and today, here in the US, the school I have just begun working for uses Pearson. Do you have a preference? I would like to start doing private lessons and would love your input on this. Also if you know of any useful workbooks that help teachers teach difficult grammar concepts I would love to know. Keep up the great work!
i got 9/10 ^_^ i need to study hard for much better ^_^
Alex,
I have a mass with it.
We say – It tastes good. Taste is a verb. It should be incorrect. According to your lesson it should not be so.
I have a text book with an entirely diffrent approach – 1. There is a group of verbs which require good ( so called linkink verbs ) 2. a group of action verbs – we use well.
Then they explain cases in which the meaning of the sentence changes more or less according to your explanations.
look good vs look well
feel good vs feel well
Eventually I am a bit lost. Can you help me?
nice and short
same doubt at first question. lsn’t well modifying the verb to taste?
Mr. Alex, I am learning a lot of English with you. Your lessons and teaching make me feel very motivated. They are clear and simple.

He motioned for us to follow him.
She motioned him into her office.
Is there any difference?

Thanks Alex.
I can’t see the big difference between ” good”and ” well”.
Hi Meglio. For some verbs we don’t use an adverb and we use an adjective, TASTE in one them:
be, become, get, smell, appear, feel, ….. a
….are some them. But some of these verbs can be used with an adverb in another meaning:
1-You appear tired.
2-She suddenly appeared at the doorway.
I hope it helps. Best regards: soei
100 thank you :)
Great lesson, Alex. But I don’t feel comfortable
answering to the question “How are you”
” I’m good.” It doesn’t sound right. It’s weird, although I’ve heard it tons of times.
Thanks a lot I make it I get it well done but by my heart I feel it and I have chosen the right answer by my heart I do understand through your nice explanation that both good as well as well are the same meaning thanks again
