This is a great and powerful tool, kindess and motivation are the keyes of every intelligent dialogue. Thanks for your suggestions, Rebecca.

Canardo

Indeed, another great lesson from Rebecca.

    Nabil

Hi, how’ve you been Rebecca? Just one question about the first part of your presentation.

Is the following question on the board correct? “Could you please lend me $25?” I think it should be “Could I borrow $25 please?” because you are taking some money from someone.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Interesting to know that psychology plays an important role when it comes to getting people do something for you.

Thanks for this superb video lesson Rebecca.

      Regino

You could ask the question in either of the two ways – the one I mentioned in the lesson or the one you wrote about. Both are perfectly acceptable. Yes, psychology is at the heart of all our interactions with others, isn’t it? It’s just that sometimes we understand what’s at play and at other times we don’t know what’s going on! So, I found this research about using the word “because” to be quite interesting. Great to hear from you again, Regino. My best wishes to you.

        Rebecca

Thanks, Nabil. Very kind of you. My best wishes to you.

      Rebecca

You are so right. Glad you enjoyed the lesson, Canardo. All the best.

    Rebecca

Hi everybody! Dear Rbecca, thanks for this lesson. I have taken the quiz but in my humble opinion the question #2 could be answered with the second option. :)

Vladimir

These exercises are helping me a lot.

Charles Colucci

So glad to hear you are benefiting. My best wishes to you.

    Rebecca

Thank you, dear Rebecca!
For below test..
8. Which of these requests is the most formal?
I was wondering if I could take two days off next week.-I chose
I hope you don’t mind my asking, but would it be at all possible for me to take a couple of days off next week? – I did not choose, because of “but would it be at all possible for me” this part. I think it is informal and very direct, it is complicated..

fakhranda

Thanks for your feedback. I understand your point. Generally though, the longer the request, the more we distance ourselves from the situation, and so it is seen as more formal and less direct. Please check my resource for added help with this topic:

    https://www.engvid.com/english-resource/getting-people-to-say-yes/

    My best wishes to you.

    Rebecca

Thank you Rebecca to learn us both English and psychology in the same time.

beernaard

You are welcome, my friend. So let me also tell you that you should say: Thank you for teaching us…. and not thank you for learning us. It is a common mistake so don’t worry. Just remember that teachers teach and students learn…hopefully! My best to you.

    Rebecca

thank you

said atmane

You’re welcome, Said. My best wishes to you.

    Rebecca

Thank you Rebecca, Your lesson is useful But it is hard to say because these expression longer I can’t remember however I try to remember.

Ukrit

The best thing to do in such cases is to start with the medium -sized request and learn just ONE expression / question, which you can use with everyone in the beginning. Then, slowly move to learn one expression in each category. Do not try to learn all the expressions at one time. Just choose one and learn that well. Thanks for your feedback and my best to you.

    Rebecca

Thank you for your recommended, if I have a chance to speak to other people I try to use short or medium request.

      Ukrit

Thanks Rebecca…^^

hugowu

You’re so welcome! All the best.

    Rebecca

Great class!Very nice Teacher!

I thought about another psychology tip , is add “I need your help on the requests”!Right?

Debasish Dutta

Thanx, Rebecca for the usefu lesson. To ask someone to do something we can also use a negative sentence + positive tag, the voice goes up at the end of the tag in sentences like: “You couldn’t do me a favor, could you?”. Sounds tricky ) Am I right?

Saeed1968 saeed

thank you for the lesson.

I have a question.

You wrote:
“I hope you don’t mind MY asking, but could I please borrow $250?”

Would it be incorrect to say/write:
“I hope you don’t mind ME asking, but could I please borrow $250?”

If both are correct, what is the difference in meaning?

audrysilva

I’m really learning a lot with all of you and I intend to support again and again you all and this site, as I hope others do this according to the utility of this site to them and their possibilities.

Hi Rebecca,
Thank you for this great lesson.
Rebecca, I spoke a simple english language and I want to increase my level of english. Could you please suggest me a book that will help me to improve my english? I find difficulty in writing and understanding complex and compound sentences. I make mistakes when selecting appropriate verb in complex sentences or choosing singular or plural. I just say: May I borrow your pencil, please? I don’t realize that you could write in another way that show your polite .I wish I could have seen this video earlier because when I was in middle school 20 years before in China , I could have got higher score in test if I could write a long paragraph .
