Emma, your grammar explanations are always clear and concise. This grammar lesson was no exception.
Thanks for everything.
Happy Holidays.
According to the video, the expression âin the last yearâ is used to refer to a PERIOD OF TIME in the past. âThis yearâ,as far as I know, can refer either to a period of time in the past or to a specific action in the past.
Examples: This year has been very productive.
My grades were excellent this year.
Hope this may clarify some doubts.
First, emma is in PINK today,
Second, its not COS its CUS
Last, dude the lesson is a peace of cake and you are concentrating on emma?
7/10 Ah ho.
Hi Emma,
Thanks for your lesson. It is a very good lesson.
This is my first comment, but I have been watching in the two last month. ( correct?
I got 10/10
I would say: “…I have been watching videos in the last two months”. :)
10/10 thank you……

i too got the same score…:( every one getting the same score i thing something wrong with this scoring meter… wonder who would be the winner then..!!?
I love you lesson, there are very useful…and you have a very nice voice…. I loveeeee S2 S2 S2 S2
The correct is.
I love your lessons, these are very useful and you have a nice voice.
That is not the correct way either. You shouldn’t correct people if your own grammar is very poor…
Just for the sake of this discussion I am pasting the correct message:
I love your lessons, they are very useful and you have a very nice voice.
Please sorry, I did not want to be rude or something like that. I was only trying to help a language partner. I know my grammar is poor but I am just learning. Big hug from Brasil.
Hi Brunus :),
I’m sorry if you felt so sorry. I didn’t want to be rude either… ;) Thanks a lot for your message. Big hug from Poland! :)
Hi Satya,
Thanks :) and have a very happy new year.
the correct is i love ur lesson .it is very useful also u have a nice voice
9/10…It wasn´t so bad
10/10 \ actually I like your accent . Where are you from ?
>In the last year, I’ve be to the UK.
>This year, I’ve been to the UK.
Hi, people. What’s the difference between “in the last year” and “This year” ??
Due to Emma’s explanation you should use either IN THE LAST YEAR (it means the period 24.12.2012-23.12.2013) or IN THIS YEAR (it means the period 01.01.2013-23.12.2013).
Thanks ! Now, I see the difference.
According to the video, the expression “in the last year” is used to refer to a PERIOD OF TIME in the past. “This year”,as far as I know, can refer either to a period of time in the past or to a specific action in the past.
Examples: This year has been very productive.
My grades were excellent this year.
Hope this may clarify your doubts.
Thank you too!
nice explanation, thanks.
I got 10/10… Thanks Engvid.com for everything, I love you guys!!!1
When I saw the word “last” in the sentence which starts with “In the last year”, I thought it was a simple past. But after viewing the full video only, I came to know it is a present perfect sentence. Nice to learn a new thing. Thanks Emma!. By the way, I will appreciate if you could make a lesson on “Present perfect time markers” as you did ‘Past simple time markers’. Thanks again.
Emma, your grammar explanations are always clear and concise; this grammar point was no exception.
Thanks for everything.
Happy Holidays.
Love it! I get 10/10. Its easy to do when I saw the Video. Thanks a ton!!
Hope this will be a very good lesson as always.

No wonder.
Thanks, Emma.
But i want to ask a question that is not related to this video.
when we talk about the picture (A) on the paper,e.g. exam paper, we say’the picture A…’ or ‘the picture of A’?

hurrr…i got 100 marks..
Thanks my beloved teacher for your useful lesson.
First of all, thanks for this video, Emma. However, I do have a question. For instance, today is Tuesday, December 24, 2013 –it’s Christmas Eve! If I say “In the last week, I have been to the bank twice,” does this mean that from Tuesday last week to December 24 I’ve been to the bank twice? If I say to you “In the last year, your English has improved a lot,” I understand that from December 24, 2012 to December 24, 2013 your English has improved a lot. Does the same idea apply to my first example?
According to what Emma said, in the last week, it seems should be count the whole week from last Tuesday to right now.
That one is simple and very common useful things for me. I don’t know difference last year and in the last year but I got it this on e at moment.
thanks and appreciate to you. Good luck your business in the next your.
i have one question.. does i use.. last years or in the last years .. similar for months, days and minutes and weeks … if yes then what does it mean.. in the last years or month or weeks or days or minutes.. i am confused.
Great! you are such a wonderful teacher. just check minute 7:31
Actually, though completely refreshing and exciting, the video still leaves a feeling of confusion in me, because when it comes to thinking about something done in the past and referring to it by means of the word ‘last’ as in the phrase LAST YEAR, LAST WEEK, I’m in a way compelled to use Past Simple for no other reason than if something was done a period longer than a day ago, it’s assumed it has no connection to the present except for the consequences we have to handle. Anyway, what you’re saying is that IN THE LAST YEAR suggests THIS YEAR in contrast to the LAST YEAR preceeding the present year. Am I right?
it seems that “in the last year” doesn’t only suggest this year, it still includes some time of the last year. just one whole year ago to the present time you are talking. is this right?
Ok, but still how does in the last year as a whole period differ from the last year used without any preposition or article at the beginning of a sentence? Does the example of Emma’s partner-seeking girlfriend actually mean that she’s still alone, and the speaker is just reporting this persons’s achievements, which are not necessarily supposed to result in a developed relationship?
Thank You :)
10/10 thank you Emma! Merry Christmas!
Thank u for this Lesson ( in the last minutes, I have been listened 3 time to your lesson. good luck .
hello
in the last example i have heard you telling last month * i bought a car * and that is OK perfect but when you explain it you said simple present which is wrong sorry dear

Regards.

I don’t understand the answer of sentence 8.
Why do you use ” In the last summer” although it have past tense after that?
very nice all in all
I’m greatly helped………. thank you very much, Emma………
thank you for help .
Dear Emma
Refering to the quiz of this lesson (10th), we say “in the last year, i’ve worn purple almost every day”.Could you please tell me if we can also say ” last year, i worn purple almost every day “, which would depend on the interpretation i would say ?
“Every day” is like a number here (or rather a frequency). However, do we use the present perfect because “in the last year” is just grammatically predominant ? On the other hand, if i don’t give up “every day” in the sentence and change the beginning “in the last year” with “last year”, we logically use the simple past.Okay.
So, with numbers or no number, are “in the” or “not in the” the predominant points to use the right tense ?
Please, I only have to know if i should use the present prefect when my idea is to say the frequency of wearing purple and it continues now in 2015, which implies “in the last year” AND I should use the past simple (although using numbers) because wearing purple was true in 2014 and over in 2015 which implies “last year” ???
In conclusion, “last year” or “in the last year” would be the induction of what i want to say ???
Could you please tell me if i am right or wrong ???
Denis
Thank you, Emma. You are great! I want to learn more about same example but different tens. Thanks again, Emma.
