sentence stress
? How does it change the meaning of a sentence? In this video, I will teach you how saying a word louder and longer in a sentence can change the sentence’s meaning. Many English learners don’t listen for sentence stress and as a result, they don’t fully understand what someone is saying. I will teach you how to recognize sentence stress and how it can change meaning. Then we will practice listening to sentences with different word stress and examine their meanings together. I’ll share many examples so you’ll be able to hear how native speakers use sentence stress, and how you can do it too! At the end of this video, you can practice more with our quiz.

Hi everyone!, Can you please help me with something?
This sentence: “You mustn’t come here”, how to say this but in the past tense? Thank you!
Hello Katy
You didn’t have to come here or you haven’t had to come here .
Wether you want to use simple past or past perfect .
This is not an order but the answer your are looking for.
“Must” has no past participle so you must use “have to” for the past tenses
Hope this help
The past tense of “must” is ought to.
you mustn’t have come here. (it’s a third form of “come”)
It should be in “Reported speech” because we can speak only at present.
Here is the sentence.
She said that I didn’t have to go there.
“must” only use in the present tense and it’s more about your feelings than necessity. You can use in reported speech structure as same or change into “had to” ; she said that “you must not come here” or she said that “you had not to come here”
Kind of off topic, but an interesting question.
“Must” doesn’t have a past. There are other ways to express the idea. Instead of “must” use “weren’t to,” “weren’t allowed/permitted to,” etc. However, those aren’t the past of your sentence. They’re ways to get around the fact that must (like some other modals) doesn’t have a past.
Great! Nice lesson
There are some important aspects on pronunciation that we as English students should be a bit more aware of their use.
For example, knowing well how to handle intonation, rhytm, and sentence/word stress in the spoken discurse can help us to convey the correct meaning and by doing so avoid having a hard time.
Thanks a million for this interesting pronunciation class Emma.

An interesting and amusing lesson because STRESS is important if you want to show the true meaning of a sentence. This video class was as a game with different players, every player might be one stressed word which has to choose its meaning, might be possible, as an example. Thanks a lot, teacher Emma, we have learned how we can explain different ideas inside the same sentence.
great lesson

Hi guys. Someone can help me please?
Idon’t understood this sentence very well it’s:
”I should study english every day”
if we stress ”Should” it’s mean: I know I should study english daily, but I don’t. But How come it’s meaning that??? I don’t understood that because when we stressed ‘like’ in the sentence: ”I like your painting” it’s meaning: it’s an okay painting.

Dear Mrs. Emma,
My name is Hoang Thi Chau An, and I’m a student at Vinh University, Viet Nam. I have visited your youtube channel and watched your video. I’m writing to ask your permission to use your video to insert it into my video.
As you just know, I am a student and now I have to do a project about my English course. Therefore my teacher asked me to find a video about it. My mission is to learn from it and insert that video as guidance in my video. I currently have found great value in your video and would appreciate your permission to use it.
I hope you and your team can support my project and I would love to let use your video illegally.
Yours sincerely,
Hoang Thi Chau An
Thanks a lot, Emma! You are amazing. (Azores Islands, Portugal, 12Jan2023);
