silent syllable
is? It’s actually one of the topics you have to master in order to sound more like a native English speaker. In this video, you’ll learn what syllables
are, which words have silent ones, and how to correctly pronounce some common words with silent syllables. You’ll also learn to count syllables, so you know how many syllables are in a word. Dear Emma, I really appreciated this lesson and I hope it won’t be the last one about pronunciation because I think it’s a key point for learning English. That said, I have a doubt on the word “comfortable”: why is it pronounced comf-ter-ble and not comf-ta-ble. Is it possible to pronunce it both ways? Thanks for your invaluable help :-). Andrea
Thank you very much Emma!!
I was counting with my finger all test long XD
Good to know! Thanks!
Hi Emma,
I always had problem with the world “negative” which is similar to portuguese “negativo” but in portuguese we have to say every vowel sound. How many syllables “negative” have?
Hi Adelino. I’ll try to answer your question instead of our best teacher Emma. The word “negative” has three syllables. Pretty much glad to help you. Good luck.

Hi, Emma. I have been learning English from your lessons since I was a student at university. Now, I believe my English has been improved and better. After I graduated from the university I got a job in KL, Malaysia. I am working for google. So, Thank you for all of your good lessons, EngVid, and every teacher from EngVid. However, I am still practicing English continually because it is very important in my life. Thank you.
Thank you so much Emma,it was amazing lesson.

good evening friends i am new cummer..

Important information here. Nice lesson, Emma!
I’m glad that the clown, the pathetic clown, Regino, the busybody, to be continued get us angry with your bold.
Why AnggloLink allowed that?
It/he/she is a serious liability.
What lession, i relly like it, I can’t wait for next Emma’s lession, thank so much
Thank your teaching, Ms. Emma
I’m a little confused.
Why do we pronounce 3 syllables in words “comfortable” & “vegetable”?
I can see 4 vowells in echs word. Well, “e” in the end we do not pronounce, that’s ok.
And as Emma said in the lesson, there is a silent syllable in each word.
So we pronounce them like “comftable” & “vegtable”.
Aren’t there only 2 pronounced vowells in each word?
And there is “chocolate”, where again we have 4 vowells, silent “e” in the end and 1 more silent syllable.
But the answer is, that in “chocolate” we have 2 pronounced syllables, not 3 like in “vegetable” & “comfortable”.
Can anybody explain, please?
Здравствуй, Ник!
We pronounce “comfortable” as /kʌmf.tə.bəl/ and “vegetable” as /vɛdʒ.tə.bəl/ since the word or suffix “-able” has two syllables /əb(ə)l/ . “Chocolate” is pronounced as /tʃɔk lət/ or /tʃɒk lɪt/. So it has only two syllables. Are you satisfied with my answer to your question?
Спасибо. Успехов тебе в освоении английского языка!
Thank you so much Zenith for your answer! I had the same question as Nick and was so confused with those words: comfortable and vegetable.
Does it means that word table, for example, has 2 syllables? And is ‘able’ always adds 2 syllables to word?
Zenith, thank you for your answer!
Syllables with no vowels, English makes me crazy!
I think Engvid should make a lesson about such hidden syllables.
Thanks a lot!
Hi, Emma! Thank you fot the lesson!
I have a question.
The word “comfortable”. I’ve turned it up in Cambridge Dictionary online. /ˈkʌmftəbl/
How is it right?
Thank you!
Great teacher
Comfortable is the most difficult word to pronounce to me !! Thank you EMMA ;)
It is a very useful lesson, but i not only believe but also heard unpronounced syllables were pronounced by native speakears.
Hi Emma,
Thank you. As usual, you did your best. Your lesson reminded me our Phonetics lesson. It was great to repeat these rules again. But I’m just wondering why we don’t have the same pronunciation of these words in dictionaries. Have a nice day.
Sincerely,
Roya.

To be picky, Broccoli is an Italian word so, in theory, you’re supposed to prononce the “O”.
That is true, but words borrowed from other languages are often pronounced differently in English.
How many words are there in in Franch that we use in English?
This is hard to answer, because French has had such a big influence on English. Almost 1000 years ago, French people invaded England, and lots of French words became part of English. (You can learn more about it in this lesson by Gill or this one by Jade. But English and French are “cousins”—so it is hard to tell if an English word comes from French, or an older language like Latin. About 30-50% of English vocabulary might come from French.
There is a much smaller number of French words that English borrowed later. Some are specialized vocabulary from French traditions like cooking. Others are more general, like “faux pas” (a social blunder), “déjà vu” (the feeling that you’ve seen something before), and “de rigueur” (obligatory according to manners or fashion). (You can learn about some of them in Adam’s lesson.) I am not sure how many there are, but they are much less common.
I hope this helps!
Thanks a lot Emma. It’s a tricky topic and I had fun countin syllables on my fingers. :D

Hi Emma, this is Lily from Japan.
Thank you for the great video about syllables. I think it will be helpful for me to pronounce and memorize the words.
And now, I have a question I would like to ask.
When I searched the word “comfortable” in Japanese dictionary, it says there are 4 syllables in “comfortable” and they are “com・fort・a・ble”.
So, how can I distinguish which syllables a word has if I don’t know how to pronounce it.
I hope you can find this comment and reply to me.

Dear Professor Emma,
gr eat lesson.
The only doubt is with the pronunciation of ” sophomore”.
According to decent dictionaries “o” after ph is schwa sound not a silent letter.
Did you say almost silent o?
I would appreciate proffesional comment.
