kheireddine007

Thank you for this lesson but I have some questions.
mom’s mother = grandmother
dad’s father = grandfather
Questions :
dad’s mother = ?
mom’s father = ?
mom’s mother + dad’s mother = ?
mom’s father + dad’s father = ?

piiraya

Your dad’s mother is also “grandmother”, and your mom’s father is also “grandfather”. You can also use “maternal/paternal” (mother’s/father’s) to clarify: your “maternal grandmother/grandfather” is your mother’s mother/father, and your “paternal grandmother/grandfather” is your father’s mother/father.

I don’t think English has a word for the last two relationships you list. Your child’s spouse would be your “son/daughter-in-law”, but as far as I know, there isn’t a word for your son/daughter-in-law’s mother and father!

Edited to add: There is machutonim (מחותנים) (it has a lot of different spellings and pronunciations) – a word from Yiddish, the Germanic language of Eastern European Jews. English has borrowed a lot of Yiddish words, but this one is less common.
