United Kingdom
, Great Britain
, England
, or the British Isles
: Which one should you use, and what’s the difference between them? And how do Ireland
, Scotland
, and Wales
relate to all of this? It really is confusing, but in this video I will explain exactly what each name refers to, and what belongs where, so you’ll have no more confusion! We’ll also talk about the relationship of Northern Ireland
to the UK, as well as the Crown dependencies – the Isle of Man
, Jersey
, and Guernsey
. I’ll also touch upon identity issues such as the proportion of people who feel “British” as opposed to just “English”, “Welsh”, “Scottish”, or “Irish”. This one is a really huge lesson, full of facts and interesting trivia about the differences between the countries that make up the United Kingdom. If you learn everything in this lesson you will truly be an expert on the geography and people of the UK!

Thank you for the lesson.
I really love the video but I’m not sure Britain includes just England and Wales. Doesn’it also include Scotland? Obviously, this is what you find in the Oxford Vocabulary of English, and maybe Scottish people don’t agree. However, I think we really should consider Scotland part of Britain. What do you think?
Everyone who learned English in USSR at school knew these great phrases:
(Teacher):
– London iz ze Capital of great Britain!
– Repeat after me, please!
And we:
– Looondoon… iiiz… zee Caapiitaal…
This is very interesting!
Thanks a lot, Jade!
I think one reason that they wouldn’t add the Welsh dragon to the current flag could be the lack of space on the flag. They have already mixed three flags on top of each other.
Another reason could be that the are worried that the dragon might sneeze and burn the flag.
It takes too much printer color to print it anyway.
Thanks for the information I did not know about it before it was helpful
thank you for the lesson, I got 100
