Hi Kate,

I’m afraid there is too much to tell you about that here. I will make some lessons on that but it might take some time.

For now though:
task 1- do not give an opinion.
– first paragraph summarize the task given ( i.e., what are you looking at?)
– next two paragraphs, mention highlights, that is highs and lows, major trends, drastic changes, etc. don’t try to include everything.
– there is no need for a conclusion.

task 2:- have an introduction that presents the topic, the question, your stand on the question, and how you will argue for it.
– at least two body paragraphs, one for each line of reasoning you will take (as presented in intro)
– conclusion should be a short summary of the essay. Do not introduce new ideas.
– make sure you give good and realistic examples.

Hopefully you have already passed your test so this is needless, but just in case. :)

Hi Kazumi,

Well, there are some old English textbooks that teach that you should never end a sentence with a preposition. It’s a little old fashioned, but some people still believe that and follow that rule. They think you should say:
From where did you get that dress?

not

Where did you get that dress from?

These days both are considered acceptable, unless you’re a purist. But they mean the same thing.

I also like

Hi Adam. A dent is also a bump on a car’s body isn’it? In French writing style, a dent is called an “alinéa”.

I am studying English le best as I can. With this aim, I am working everyday vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. One problem is the richness of the English vocabulary which probably counts more than twice the number of French words. In addition, a single word can become a verb or a noun and often, adding ‘ly’ or ‘ness’ to a verb, you get an adverb or a noun not to mention the phrasal verbs which are pure nightmares. However we can take advantage of this abundance of words to avoid repeating twice a word in one sentence.
Now, concerning grammar….
At last, I would say that pronunciation is capital to be understood by native English speakers, you are better off making vocabulary or grammar than pronunciation mistakes.
So, I can just say that learning English is a nice personal challenge..

60 — this is the worst score I’ve ever had, at least for a very very long time. I just can’t choose the better option. Sometimes two, or even three, variants sound good to me, so how can I decide? :)

The funniest thing is that in my country people use tab for starting a new paragraph, and I do not follow that way, and I’m using space (skipped line) all the time because I think this looks a way better than a little indentation. Besides in the internet, everyone uses spaces because you can’t simply make tab in these forms on www pages when you are commenting something. :)

I agree. I skip lines as well, but it all depends on who you are writing for. Every publication has its own style guide. Academic writing, though, usually asks for indentation.

Can’t really say there is a standard. I think American is more popular but that’s because America has a greater reach globally, in terms of Hollywood, CNN, etc. Internet English is mostly American as well. I’ll try to see if there is any research on this question and let you know.

With on to, remember that the on goes with the verb, the to goes with the object.
so, hold on, means grab, or hold tight. to what? to the rail.

‘onto’, basically means ‘on’. It’s not used as often as plain ‘on’.

As for the ‘get onto this deal’, it means as you said, to come to know/be involved with something.

Hi Adam, great lesson! I thought it was going to be a pretty boring aspect of English ( sorry, but it’s not as much fun as say, idioms or vocabulary :)) ) but you made it really interesting and what’s the most important – useful :)

My question concerns putting quotations. I’m not sure if my inquiry is within the subject, but if it’s not too much trouble, can you please explain how I should quote in say, MA thesis? Just to be sure that we’re on the same page, for example ” learning should be an autonomous process” Brown J. … should I use ” or ‘ ? What else should I write, the year, the page, what if Mr. Brown is also quoting someone else ? Sorry if I haven’t explained my question thoroughly enough but that’s just it- I’m really confused when it comes to these quotations in e.g. MA thesis. Thanks a lot!:)

You’re not alone. It is very confusing. First of all, you need to find out which style guide you’re supposed to use (APA, MLA, Chicago). Your MA syllabus shouold tell you that.

Next, try OWL at Purdue. This site will give you all the formatting info you need. It’s a very useful and easy to use site.

Hi Adam! This is a great lesson. I am planning to retake my IELTS because I did not quite reach the writing band score that I had wanted (I had a 6.5 but I was opting for a 7 or a 7.5). I like writing, to be honest, but I struggle a lot when it comes to academic writing. Your video made it easier for me to understand how ideas should flow within a paragraph and how to transition to the next paragraph without making the reader confused as to what I am trying to convey.

First of all, thank you! This is a very useful lesson, like most of your lessons.
I was wondering, is the paragraph you gave as an example not too long for an essay? If you have 3 paragraphs like this + introduction + conclusin it’s gonna be more than 350 words, or even more than 400. I thought that an essay should be more concise and not too oversized, otherwise you may loose points. I though that perfect essay size is between 250 and 300 words.
Not even to mention that very few people could write such a long essay with good coherance and grammar in less than 40 minutes.
Could you comment on this, please.

Terrific tips, thanks a lot, I was wondering if you could possibly produce a similar video but applicable to the Cambridge CPE Writing test, the main challenge in the test consists of writing a discursive essay where the key points of two texts of approximately 100 words each need to be summarized and evaluated, it also requires expressing my own idea/opinion on the topic in approximately 240-280 words.

I know this is uncommon, but I am taking the exam early next year and you have a way of explaining things that actually make sense, thanks a lot.

When I tried to write “flow-bridges” especially at the end of the first body paragraph, it seemed a bit off of the main idea because it is rather more about the next paragraph. If I skip the flow bridge at the end, and just starting next paragraph, would it be too dramatic?

I think that’s the most difficult part if you’re taking the TOEFL test, like I’m about to do soon. I wish there were a platform where we could get our essays corrected, even that in a general way, like… correct just a few so we see the most common mistakes. Mine would probably be the lack of vocabulary.

Regarding the first question, I think it might be less confusing if you changed caffeine to theine because contrary to popular belief, tea does not contain caffeine. So the sentence “The history of tea drinking around the world” does not fit the topic of the paragraph devoted to caffeine.
